It’s been nearly seven years since his previous solo album, but El Gant is back with a banger of a new single, “Chromed Out,” featuring frequent collaborators Ras Kass and Planet Asia, over J57’s hard-hitting production with cuts supplied by DJ Jon Doe. 

To be fair, Gant hasn’t been completely quiet since 2014’s 'Beast Academy' LP. For one, he’s one third of the Jamo Gang with Ras and J57, and they’ve dropped a number of acclaimed projects (peep 2020’s Walking With Lions). But with the release of “Chromed Out,” the NYC rap vet is back on his solo tip to get the world ready for his forthcoming new album, 'O.S.L.O.,' which is set to feature Killah Priest, Bobby J From Rockaway, King Magnetic, and more, as well as production supplied by the legendary DJ Premier and Marco Polo, among others. 

Gant is fired up on this track, spitting equally ferocious and witty bars, like “I’m on a mission/ Half the caucasian rappers I came up in the game with done changed into Peter Griffin.” His two guests, Ras and Planet Asia, are on fire, too, with mean-mugging rhymes that complement J57’s head-nodding and raw instrumental.

Problems

“Artpiece” the first single off of the album, "Gantatallo"  features Ras Kass with dark, powerful, hard hitting production from Martello. On the lead off track Gant and Ras express where they are coming from musically, while staying true to the craft.

An uzi's firing rate is precisely six hundred rounds per minute. Neither one of us are counting bars, but El Gant's presentation here over 42 Keez's canvas could very well be the closest representation of a lyrical uzi in 2015. "Raw", the lead single off his upcoming Spray Music EP, cosigns itself that Gant's emceeing abilities have been doing pushups since the acclaimed 2014 release of Beast Academy. With 42 Keez's Chicago-driven soundscape and a universally accepted and respectable rhyme display, the single attests to mainstream potentiality and sits well on the current, in listeners of 2015. In opposition, don't get the potential screwed up. Gant is always building with and in the lab with veteran emcees and true schoolers, alongside successful solo strives and his IV League posse (Ras Kass, Shabaam Sahdeeq, El Da Sensei and more).  In a recent exchangement of dialogue with RESPECT. Magazine's Dread Solo he was asked about breath control. Gant responds, "I moved into an oxygen chamber three stories under the earth". This sums up the admirable aesthetics of "Raw".
