I composed a title theme for The Odyssey, an epic poem written by Homer in 8th Century BCE, which tells the story of Odysseus (a hero of the Trojan War) and his perilous 10-year journey home to Ithaca, where Penelope - encircled by conniving suitors - awaits his return.

This theme was written for an 80-piece orchestra, and this version was recorded and mixed by me using virtual orchestral samples from Spitfire Audio.

I wrote a title theme for Homer's Odyssey

"Thereafter in the daytime she would weave at her great loom,
but in the night she would have torches set by, and undo it."
(The Odyssey of Homer, Book II, lines 104-105)

I composed a theme for Penelope, from Homer’s 8th Century epic poem The Odyssey. For 20 years, Penelope has been awaiting the return of her husband Odysseus from the Trojan War. Left with the island kingdom of Ithaca, she endures the pursuits of countless opportunistic suitors who have taken up residence in her home, believing Odysseus dead and wishing to marry Penelope to gain power. In a gamble for time, she announces that she will marry a suitor after having woven a shroud for Odysseus’ ageing father. But secretly, she unwinds her progress each night.

I composed a love theme for Homer’s 8th Century epic poem The Odyssey. At its heart, The Odyssey is about two lovers—Penelope and Odysseus—longing to be reunited after 20 years of separation caused by war, gods, monsters, and the sea.

I wrote a love theme for Homer's Odyssey

“I am Odysseus son of Laertes, known before all men
for the study of crafty designs, and my fame goes up to the heavens.” 
(The Odyssey of Homer, Book IX, lines 19-20)

“You will come first of all to the Sirens, who are enchanters 
of all mankind and whoever comes their way; and that man 
who unsuspecting approaches them, and listens to the Sirens
singing, has no prospect of coming home”
(The Odyssey of Homer, Book XII, lines 39-42)

I composed a theme for Odysseus, the protagonist of Homer’s 8th Century epic poem The Odyssey. On his 10-year journey home from Troy to Ithaca, Odysseus endures the whims of the gods, the unpredictability of the seas, the magic of sorcerers, and the snares of cyclopes, sea monsters, and other mythical creatures.

Among the most iconic of these creatures are the Sirens, who charm passing seafarers with enchanting songs, luring them to their island and their deaths. Odysseus has his crew block their ears and tie him to the mast, so that he may safely hear the wisdom and beauty in the sirens’ song.

The first half of this composition is my theme for Odysseus, which then transitions into an imagining of the song of the Sirens.

I wrote a suite for Homer's Odyssey

Have you ever heard the expression “Nero fiddled while Rome burned”?

In 64 A.D., a fire tore through Rome for 6 days, destroying huge parts of the city. The story goes that Emperor Nero stood on the roof of his palace and played a piece of music called “The Fall of Troy” while the fire burned away the city beneath him.

There’s something so iconic and relevant about the image of a pompous, dramatic, and out of touch ruler idly playing sad music in the face of catastrophe - it feels like the perfect moment to imagine a piece of music for. And the fact that most historians agree that it probably never happened (the fiddle didn’t even exist in 64 A.D.) somehow makes it even more intriguing, as if it could equally have been a moment from history or a scene from a movie.

I wrote what Nero played while Rome burned

“‘How sad it is!’ murmured Dorian Gray, with his eyes still fixed upon his own portrait. ‘How sad it is! I shall grow old, and horrible, and dreadful. But this picture will remain always young. It will never be older than this particular day of June…If it were only the other way! If it were I who was to be always young, and the picture that was to grow old! For that—for that—I would give everything! Yes, there is nothing in the whole world I would not give! I would give my soul for that!’"

(From Chapter II of The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.)

Set in London in the late 1880s, The Picture of Dorian Gray is a story about a young man who offers up his soul in exchange for the eternal youth and beauty of his portrait by painter Basil Hallward. As the story continues and Dorian is slowly tempted into a life of hedonism by Lord Henry, he remains young, but the picture begins to age and distort, showing all of the stains of his violence, cruelty, and betrayals.

This composition is how I imagine the title credits of an adaptation of the novel.

I wrote a title theme for The Picture of Dorian Gray

‘...look like the innocent flower,
But be the serpent under't.’

(From Act I, Scene V of Macbeth by William Shakespeare)

Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s darkest tragic plays. It begins as three witches prophesy Macbeth’s ascension to power as the King of Scotland. While he initially veers on uncertainty, his wife, Lady Macbeth, becomes obsessed with the prospect of ruling. She urges Macbeth to take fate into his own hands, setting them on a violent and destructive path in pursuit of power.

This piece was composed, recorded, and mixed by me using real instruments and virtual instruments from Spitfire Audio and Native Instruments.

I wrote a theme for Lady Macbeth

Ignorance is strength

Always the eyes watching you and the voice enveloping you. Asleep or awake, working or eating, indoors or out of doors, in the bath or in bed—no escape."

1984 is a novel set in a futuristic, totalitarian Britain. Ruled by the mysterious Big Brother and constantly surveilled by the Ministry of Truth and the Thought Police through two-way television screens and hidden microphones, any hint of freethinking or anti-party sentiment is brutally stamped out. The novel follows Winston, who secretly harbours a desire to see the oppressive regime overthrown. His growing political consciousness begins in earnest as he writes his discontent in a diary, but ends with his psychological torture in the Ministry of Love's dreaded Room 101.

I wrote a theme for 1984

"It was on a dreary night of November that I beheld the accomplishment of my toils. With an anxiety that almost amounted to agony, I collected the instruments of life around me, that I might infuse a spark of being into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet. It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out, when, by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open."
(From Chapter 5 of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley)

Mary Shelley's 1818 gothic novel Frankenstein follows Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who creates a living being from body parts through a secret experiment. Despite selecting beautiful parts for the being, Frankenstein is horrified by the appearance of his creation, and both flee. On his own in the wilderness, the creature slowly learns to speak, read, and perform good deeds that help others. But the more he tries to connect with people, the more they shun him with rejection and violence, terrified of his appearance. The creature descends into a spiral of vengeance against his creator, leading the two of them to one final meeting on the arctic ice.

I wrote a theme for Frankenstein

This piece is called "Kites", and is inspired by the works of Studio Ghibli and the enchanting music of Joe Hisaishi.

From 'Spirited Away' to 'Howl's Moving Castle' to 'The Wind Rises' to 'Only Yesterday', Studio Ghibli have consistently created beautiful animated worlds filled with intriguing, complex characters and stories. Often accompanied by the soaring, yet delicate music of Joe Hisaishi, Studio Ghibli's movies are some of my favourites of all time. 

I wanted to write a piece in honour of these films, and to try and explore the balance between the nostalgia, charm, and melancholy that I find in the films' music. Hope you enjoy it!
