Our landscape is always changing but the sea remains the same. A place that we can always return to whenever we need to seek comfort, peace of mind and refuge.

By The Sea was a collection of five instrumental tracks that were inspired by the coastal line on the eastern side of Singapore. From moments spent watching the waves gently lapping against the shore, or hiding underneath a shelter during the ocean rain, melodies and structures came naturally, effortlessly and automatically. With the sparkling guest musicianship of Junya Yanagidaira (ironomi), and renowned Singaporean musicians Leslie Low and Bani Haykal, these five tracks were an attempt to recapture those moments and memories with sound and melody. Layers and colours of drifting, gentle guitar textures and drones that hopefully evoke the image or feeling of the sea and its waves within the listener.

This 10th anniversary edition of the album contains a bonus track called Glittering Of Ocean Waters that did not make it to the album when it was first released, but was made available for listening online. I decided to restore it to make all the surviving tracks from that period available in a single release format.

On the invitation of Singaporean artist Ong Kian Peng, I performed live for the first time in several years. The performance was on opening night of the 2022 Singapore Biennale and was intended as a presentation of his superb and visually beautiful six-channel film installation work titled The Viscous Sea. It explores the Dead Sea as a site of ecological disaster and is the culmination of his time as Artist-in-Residence in Jordan.

With a minimal setup and very little practice on my part, we performed together with Kian Peng remixing his footage on the fly and me reacting by improvising to it. I had a great time, and it built up quite a bit of musical energy in me after the show. Feeling inspired, I promised Kian Peng that I would replicate whatever I could remember playing from that performance into recording so that it's not wasted.

I started recording the things I could recall doing during the live performance but as this was going on, I had the opportunity to view the installation again and think deeply about the artwork for weeks. New musical ideas started to sprout in my head, and I realised that purely recreating the live performance was rather uninspiring, insincere and lazy. I decided to scrap everything I've done and follow what the music is telling me to do, which is to write a sort of "soundtrack" inspired by Kian Peng's film instead. These three tracks are the end result. I hope they successfully translate the things I imagined for the film, the feeling of intense heat, the dry and dusty desert air and wind, and coolness and calm of the Dead Sea while it slowly dies as time goes by.

Longing for someone, some place, far away from here

I had a reunion of sorts with an old friend, Shark Fung (Awk Wah), who together with me, formed two thirds of Zai Kuning's trio called Amino Acid Orchestra. We were called upon by our friend the sound designer and composer Zai Tang for his installation work called Spectres, an audio-visual installation exploring the spectre of extinction. This was recorded on 7th July 2017. I was very happy to be able to play with Shark again. It was like old times.

Raining At Sea (w/ Junya Yanagidaira)

One of the most exhilarating and scariest memory for me performing live. Zai Kuning and me as Amino Acid Orchestra with the legendary Keiji Haino. This was during the second last show of AAO's Japan tour in May 2010, at Club Goodman in Tokyo, Japan. A rare quiet musical conversation by both parties (knowing Zai's and Haino san's history) but ended on a high with Haino san bringing out his hurdy gurdy and everyone going crazy. Apparently, it's a rare occasion for him to play the hurdy gurdy live. It was like fighting with two monsters. Keiji Haino: voice, flute, hurdy gurdy + Zai Kuning: voice, guitar + Fuzz Lee: guitar.

Café Air EP is the result of a collaboration between Far Eastern artists Sima Kim and Fuzz Lee (Elintseeker) who hail from South Korea and Singapore respectively. Both artists have previously had material released via Somehow Recordings and Mu Nest and their differing approaches to sound art join as one in this EP.

Both artists are used to performing live and this experience is not wasted on their combined studio effort, which uses the space sensitively. Café Air was recorded with Sima writing and arranging the piano melodies which were passed to Fuzz, who added guitar, field recordings and additional processing.
A café is usually a meeting place, where conversation fills the room. Café Air strives to create an atmosphere familiar to anyone who has visited a small café alone to find it empty, as accidental sound fills the room and the vacated space gives way to empty thoughts.

Throughout the three recordings, the delicate sound of the piano is gently cradled with atmospheric detail, allowing the mind to haze over into a day-dream state. The fifteen minute restriction imposed by an Audio Gourmet EP does little to force Café Air along its path at pace. Instead it lies unhurried; time stands on end, emptiness prevails.

Singaporean music producer Fuzz Lee, who operates under the moniker elintseeker, began his musical journey as a drummer, but it was the guitar that ultimately became his voice. As his love for atmospheric soundscapes deepened, he moved away from the conventional frameworks of guitar and band music, entering a solitary realm of composition where he harmonises dissonance with resonance, blending hazy atmospheres, melody, and nostalgia. In this space, he weaves these elements together, crafting a sonic language that transcends genres.

Over the years, he has collaborated with a diverse range of artists and musicians, contributing to albums, art installations, video projects, and live performances. His work embodies a fluid dialogue between sound and form, capturing a continuous evolution in response to life itself.

Since 2011, his artistic journey has spanned continents, encompassing a diverse array of musical projects. He has released works through various labels, as well as independently. His 2012 debut, By The Sea, released by the UK-based Somehow Recordings, is an evocative ode to the ocean by his home—a delicate exploration of guitar ambient drone that captures the vastness and serenity of the sea.

His subsequent release, Geography of the Heart, issued in 2015 by the Japanese label PLOP/NATURE BLISS, stands as his most celebrated work. A reflection of his travels across Europe, the album intertwines geography and emotion, tracing a map of intimate experiences and landscapes. It was recognized by the influential American webzine Silent Ballet as one of the top albums of 2015.

Following this, PLOP/NATURE BLISS released Gerwalk Modes, an accidental album born from the remnants of improvisations, intended for a commissioned live performance.

From the ethereal drift of ambient drone to the textured layers of folk, electroacoustic, electronic, and neoclassical music, his work reflects a dynamic, ever-shifting landscape of expression and experience.
