I’ve been putting together mixes for International Women’s Day since 2017 and it’s always something I put extra special thought into.
 
It would be too easy and boring to just select the fiercest techno queens around right now. Instead I like to shine a spotlight on some of my own heroines and mix up the genres  - we go from classical to 140bpm in 60 minutes - prepare yourself!
 
I say it every year but women in music is not a new thing despite what we are led to believe - my sisters have been smashing it since the very beginning of electronic music history and this mix is my attempt to make sure no one EVER forgets this.
 
The mix starts with someone I believe is the most important female electronic artist alive today -Wendy Carlos - not only has she composed some of the best iconic electronic scores for movies like A Clockwork Orange, The Shining  and Tron  (which opens the mix) - she was the first trans woman ever to win a Grammy - in fact she won THREE in 1970.   FIERCE!!
 
Other legends featured include Anne Clarke, Madonna, Beyonce (together with all my favourite  Afro girls ) and a BEC remix of Sonique - the original female superstar DJ with her timeless ‘It Feels So Good.
 
They appear alongside some of the newer artists I’m so excited about in 2024 including SUCHI, Polygonia, Desna, Elisa Elisa and Cosmicat.

Franco-Algerian musical nomad Elisa Elisa lands on Heist with a warehouse infused EP + a drum frenzied remix by Melé .

With a wild fusion of musical roots, Elisa Elisa has found her sound in emotive, percussion driven house. She uses her own vocals to add atmospheric depth to her tracks and with a knack for acid lines and driving chords, her tracks have the type of energy that could keep you going all night long. Her music first popped up on our radar after her releases on Heat Up (topping the charts with her debut release), and He.She.They with the track ‘Girl I got you’, that got rinsed by the Heist crew since its release. Her recent release on Melé’s Club Bad records, Panorama bar gigs and a feature in the book ‘Lady of the House’ about women in electronic music really helped cement her position as a rising voice in modern day dance music.

The ‘What about me’ EP kicks off with warehouse anthem ‘Lift me up’. Roughed up drums and toms set the pace while Elisa Elisa chants in loopy fashion ‘Our rhythm is moving’. It’s a fitting vocal for this track, that reaches its full energy when it breaks down into ravey stabs, uplifting vocal chops and a nasty acid line. 

Club-bad owner Melé is a man who knows his peaktime jams. It’s fitting that he was so enthusiastic about this release and chose to remix ‘You no good to me’,since he just released an EP by Elisa Elisa himself on his excellent ‘Club Bad’ imprint. His version is a bubbly electronic affair that has his worldly percussive style all over it. He cleverly chops Elisa Elisa’s vocal and adds layers and layers of tropical bad-assery ona track that grooves like Brazilian carnival and packs a punch like the Liverpool warehouse parties Melé grew up with.  

The original of ‘You no good to me’ takes a more stripped back approach and sees the artist dive into a rave-tinged drum workout with added vocal chops and a killer acid line. The EP closes off with “Whistle me”; a deep burner with a Midwest-inspired synth progression, and -of course- whistles.   

There’s a great crossover energy in Elisa Elisa’s debut on Heist between all the good things of house music, acid and African rhythms and we’re excited to have her on the label.

After 10 years learning classical and jazz piano Elisa Elisa fell in love with the French electronic music scene in her hometown Lyon. And the urge to absorb the Berlin vibes became unbearable!

In 2012, she landed in one of Berlin´s most legendary clubs, Watergate to write her master thesis about House Music. Since then she has been playing worldwide spreading her love and passion for music.

"For me, party and music are about the community, sharing and cherishing the moment." Coming herself from the dance floor, she sees those moments as powerful as meditation.

In 2020, she released her first EP Drum Love on Heat Up which madly reached number #1 on Beatport Deep House! The Franco-Algerian producer pays legacy to her North African roots infused with her protestant gospel ancestry.

As she says herself, "I am a mix"! And this is how she transcribed the fusion of her origins by creating her own identity through her music.

The amazing producer Homero Espinosa also asked her to remix a bomb track feat Bear Who?.

In 2021, Elisa Elisa made her debut on Cacao Records with an artist she has been admiring for years, Emmanuel Jal! Through the track „Amazigh“ meaning Berber, the producer reconnects with her ancestors, while fusing spirits in the present with the voice of Emmanuel Jal and her own.

Followed up with releases on Bambossa Records, Nite Grooves, Sous by the amazing Anja Schneider and He.She.They. And bomb remixes from Demuir and Enoo Napa!

Elisa Elisa played worldwide at clubs and festivals such as Panorama Bar, Club Chinois, Papaya Playa Project, Fusion, La Bellevilloise, Night Tales, Antik, Harry Klein, Armando Records, Feel, Woodstower…

Elisa Elisa got also published in the very first book dedicated to women in House Music: The Lady of the House!
