Pure Imagination - arranged for orchestra

In early summer 2020, the world was shut down and our bodies were isolated from dancing joyfully alongside each other… Pink Pony Clubs in West Hollywood were a mere fantasy that a then-unknown queer pop artist named Chappell Roan longed for in song lyrics from her musical debut on the world stage. Fast forward three years and the world has reopened; “Pink Pony Club” became Vulture’s “Song of the Summer 2021,” a real Pink Pony Club debuted in the queer village at Burning Man in 2022, and Chappell Roan is now readying for the release of her first full-length studio album (and upcoming tour) in September 2023. In homage to one of the greatest new artists on the verge of superstardom, we present our dance floor take on this iconic queer AF anthem. Clear Path Ensemble is the neu project and brainchild of Wellington jazz and sonic arts graduate Cory Champion. Also producing left field house and techno under the name Borrowed cs, Clear Path Ensemble is Cory’s first offering to the jazz gods. Having spent many years playing drums alongside some of New Zealand’s most talented musicians in the revered Wellington jam session scene this release is an amalgamation of the energy & spirit that the Wellington scene encompasses. Walking over the blurred lines of psychedelia and spiritual jazz and taking cues from planetary rhythms and celestial oddities, CPE invokes a higher sense of self through the transformative power of sound. In it’s truest essence these are a collection of cosmic compositions and a release that in our opinion is one of the heaviest to ever emerge from the New Zealand neo-jazz scene.
