ethics questions. will it be used for benefitting cultures in which it is developing? I'd suggest yes until we become altruistic, recognising we are all part of the global family.

An Introduction to the Ethics of Nanotechnology: I first heard about nanotechnology working as a science writer for the MacDiarmid Institute of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials in NZ in 2004. It seemed innocent enough - just extremely small science - so it was a shock to find it at the centre of a controversy. There are fears that, if not handled with care, nanotechnology could become 'the next GM!'

In September 2007 I attended 'The second International Course on the Public Communication and Applied Ethics of Nanotechnology' - a week-long course exploring ethical and safety issues in nanotechnology with top scientists, ethicists, environmentalists, journalists, policy analysts and business people.

What happens if you take 3 great jazz musicians, put them in recording studio, and throw electronic music at them?

This project was an experiment into exactly that, with my long running collaborator Kathrin deBoer on vocals, and the greatest trumpet player I've yet to hear - Quentin Collins, with Jack Stevens on bass for this one track from the EP too. 

We made some recordings where Kathrin and Quentin played at the same time, which was really interesting - I love the way you can hear Kathrin and Quentin almost talking to each other during the track, they sort of imitate and bounce off each other as they go along. They were having a lot of fun during the recordings and I think it comes through.

The fun we were having making the recordings was aided by the fact that Gearbox records (who are releasing the EP 6th Oct on vinyl, and 3rd Nov on digital) had provided Mark Ronson's recording studio for us to work in, so it was a pleasure all round.

There are 3 more tracks to come from the release, 2 ambient, and one absolute abomination where I wanted to see what would happen if I made the most f*&ked up track I could and then asked them to improvise over it - more clips and info coming soon.

If you want to catch Quentin Collins playing, he does regular gigs in London at Ronnie Scotts, amongst other places. And Kathrin deBoer has also launched a new solo project under her name, which is also touring and highly recommended.

I'm a 'Science Communicator' by profession, which means I translate the incomprehensible murmurings of scientists into language for normal people.  

I studied Physics and Science Communication at uni and have been writing and making podcasts about science and other stuff for about 7 years. Last year I won the Prime Minister's Science Communication Prize in New Zealand, which has given me the incredible opportunity to spend a couple of years developing my skills. Among other things I'm using the time to work on a crazy new podcast series called "The Nano-Adventures of Elf and Loo" with a very enthusiastic physicist called Elf.

I think radio is a delicious medium.

There's something immediate and personal about it - the fact that you can slip a microphone in to a conversation almost without the person noticing means you can get a really honest unself-conscious response.

I love talking to people. When you hit on something they love they get a sparkle in their eyes that you can flow. The conversation comes alive and something interesting, real and often funny comes out. I'm always looking for ways to induce these unself-conscious moments and capture them on tape. 

I also love editing - mixing sounds, music and voices to create sound-scapes that take you to another place and evoke an emersive atmosphere and emotion.
