Ellen Allien - one of Berlin’s most ardent techno ambassadors - proudly unveils her latest full-length expedition into the realms of underground electronica. Brimming with creative energy, Ellen’s new LP AURAA follows her 2019 release Alientronic, and is her third album in three years. Raw, emotive and capable of transporting you from reality to an electrofied fantasy, AURAA explores the notion of unseen energies controlling our planet.

Beginning with the faintest hint of trance euphoria on the downtempo ‘Hello Planet Earth (Breath Mix)’, the album soon moves into more bumpin’ territory with ‘In Music I Trust’ - Ellen’s signature use of vocals-as-melody entrancing the listener. ‘Walking In The Dark’ takes things up a notch further with jabbing percussion and mesmerising atmospherics, followed by ‘Confusion’, a masterclass in heady hypnotic composition. ‘Human’ is a deeply affecting beatless segue with its drone-esque soundscape. ‘True Romantics’ taps into your emotional centre utilising hard beats and wistful synth lines. Lastly, ‘Traum’ (Dream in English) takes us out of our bodies and into the infinite realm of vibration, as waves of beautifully composed pads and bubbling analogue bass encourage us to transcend into the next astral plane.

As you may expect from Ellen, the release is packed with raw emotion, rave motifs and unrelenting energy in her own inimitable style.

‘Rosen’ kicks things off, merging melodrama and emotive atmospherics, it’s an immersive experience as the beats pulsate and a simple, but effective analogue melody works its magic. A distorted vocal creeps in and repeats over and over at various intervals, complementing the darkness of the instrumental.

This is followed by ‘N2020’, a pounding techno stomper. The oscillating bassline is joined by mysterious effects hovering in the mid-range. Sombre strings punctuate the breakdown, before we’re launched back into the deep end with the constant thud of the main kick drum working alongside the juddering low end.

The EP closes with two versions of ‘KCKC’. Firstly, it’s the ‘Epic Mix’, which sees Ellen implementing a vocal in her typically skilful way. An extended intro, lasting just over two and a half minutes builds the tension until we’re ready to burst, slamming kick drums juxtaposed with ethereal pad work. Then we have the original version, which is taut and potent, the drums, bass, vocals and pads all intertwined to create a mesmerising finale to the EP. KCKC became Ellen’s personal anthem of her balcony sets during covid lockdown.

To be free, means to be a freak. Whether as a DJ, label manager, T-Shirt creator or all-round talent – since two decades, Ellen Allien is one of Berlin’s exceptional phenomena that have created her own universe with the combination of old school-based underground love and contemporary experimental spirit. After the lovely musical affair with Thomas Muller for the track „Free Nation“, for her new solo release we hear the anniversary bells ringing. The three tracks – which are co-produced by Martin Eyerer and Skinnerbox – already mark the 300th catalog number of BPitch Control.
The „Freak EP“ is not only the result of the last months in Berlin; it also flags up the change to Ibiza, where Ellen uses the warm season to spray her positive vibe during her residency in DC 10. „Butterfly“ acts like the kick-off and not only host graceful 808 pinpricks, with the dreamy melody in the background a nostalgic aura raises that reveals Ellen’s warmer side. Especially the bass rumble emphasizes the physicality of her music in an impressive manner – in short: pure love. „Come To
Me“ is desire and passion within seven and a half minutes. In addition to the deep house frame groovy beats pushes in the foreground that sets free a hypnotic mantra. Spineless dancefloor magic that rewinds time with the haunting rave signal, floating Roland synths and the SH101 raveline. With the title track „Freak The Night Away“, Ellen once more succeeded in creating a hymn that embodies both the slogan of every great night as well as the strong atmosphere of her energetic DJ sets. Again, we hear Ellen’s charming voice – crazy, playful, creative. Following the motto: just go! With rattling claps and a warm bass, dancing won’t become a compulsion; the track clearly goes under the skin with its 303 acid hints as well as Roland piano sounds and opens the gate to another dimension. Ellen Allien Keeps It Raw with the Third Release from Her UFO Label

Ellen Allien returns with the third release from her label UFO Inc. Focused on a raw aesthetic, UFO Inc. serves as a space for artists to explore the dark, rugged side of the music. On this third installment from the label we get three deliciously dark productions...

First out of the block is ‘La Musica Es Dios’ , which comes in two mixes. On the first mix the mood is upbeat with bright frequencies and skipping beats. Though, once the main body of the track comes in, a menacing swathe of analogue growls and snarls at you with aplomb. A breakdown tinged with 8-bit leads us into a rousing sec- tion of the track before another slight break ushers in more menace in the low end.

The second works from the deeper tremor of its juddering bassline, subtle beats tease this cut along with a contagious rhythm. As a master of vocal hooks, Ellen skillfully introduces a distorted clip that repeats over and over as the drama unfolds. Wistful pads and a sombre riff keep it melancholy.

Finally, ‘Junge sein’ (german for ‚being a boy‘) penetrates our minds with its punchy drums and snares. The pace is quicker and more energised with a pervading sense of dread emanating from the background. This cut is downright nasty, with a sneering riff and shadowy atmospherics. Rough, rugged and raw analogue technoid funk from an unknown future.
