The Only Colour That I See Today - Original

Bushes and Briars is one of my favourite traditional English folk songs. It was collected by Vaughan Williams from a shepherd in Essex and an arrangement of it was published 1908. Thank you Neil Kelly for the lovely banjo playing. This was recorded and produced by Neil Kelly at Run Stop Sound in Abbotsford, Melbourne.

Queen of Hearts is a beautiful but sad traditional English folk song which compares love to a game of cards. It has a lovely 17th century sound to it.

This song is on my latest album 'Fruits of Love' released on 24th May 2020. 'Fruits of Love' is a compilation of traditional Celtic, English and American folk songs.

Queen Of Hearts - traditional English folk song

This lovely traditional English folk song is a song about love with no bounds. I fell in love with it when I first heard it but felt it was too short and so added my own lyrics and some of my own music to it.

The lyrics I added are:

I will give my love a boat without any oars
I will give my love an ocean without any shores
I will give my love a song where e'er he may be
And he may then sing it as he sails home to me

My body is a boat without any oars
My passion is an ocean without any shores
My soul is my song where e'er he may be
And he may then sing it as he sails home to me

I Will GIve My Love An Apple - traditional English folk song

This song was written by American Blues artist Leadbelly and is sometimes known as “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” or “My Girl”. There are various thoughts as to what the song is about ranging from a horrific murder cover up, to a song about an affair between a white man and a black woman in the context of southern racism.

In The Pines - traditional American blues song - Leadbelly

This song tells of personal spiritual struggle and was first recorded by gospel blues artist Blind Willie Johnson in 1927. I first heard this song sung by American artist Abigail Washburn with her beautiful banjo accompaniment and fell in love with this song straight away.

Nobody's Fault But Mine - traditional American gospel blues song

This beautiful traditional English folk song is about love which has no boundaries. This song was first arranged by Benjamin Britten and Herbert Howells. My arrangement of this traditional song includes some lyrics I added. Listen out for the third and fourth verses!

The lyrics I added are:

Ellen Fish has been playing, writing and singing folk songs since 2001. She has recently recorded her third album at Run Stop Sound in Abbotsford, Victoria with producer and composer Neil Kelly. Her style ranges from poignant contemporary folk to country, gospel and blues. Her songs explore local Australian themes and create personal inner landscapes.
