Repetition Is Key

After a 1-year hiatus, the Avenue Red 1210 podcast series has a fresh installment of 12 records, each one being 10+ years old. Stepping up to the platters we have Moutier, a veteran DJ duo from Leeds who have in recent years also turned their hands to being producers and label owners. In 2017 they launched their Enclave Records imprint, which alongside their own works has featured an illustrious roster of talent, including Harrison BDP, Javonntte, Kresy, BioRoot and Niklas Andersson among others.

No strangers to the origins of true deep house, these guys have dug through an enormity of special black gold releases over the last couple of decades. Also with them having played a lot of gigs around the UK (especially in the north of England) throughout this time, they are well qualified to compile and mix something timeless and special from their collective treasure trove of records. They show their fine skills as DJ's in the way they hold that elusive dancefloor groove as they flutter through the tracks. To dance or not to dance? It is simply not an option.

"Here's 12 of our favourite cuts from that truly golden period of 1995 until just after the millennium. We purposely avoided going for something super banging, but rather just some good old fashioned deepness and gentle undulation, building towards the unreal Journeyman (an under-the-radar alias of the legendary Jean F. Cochois, better known as The Timewriter) track at the end.

A lot of these producers get somewhat overlooked when looking back at this period and perhaps, apart from true Discogs saddos like us, don't get the love from the current generation of house heads that they deserve. It was a lot of fun going through the stems and listening out for ways to change the track entirely. No additional instruments were added, the whole track is made from the stems, although many of these were heavily edited.

I noticed that a lot of the vocal melodies worked in a different key, which the track changes to in the outro. In playing with the timing of the lead vocals. bringing subtle parts of the original arrangement to the fore and shifting the tuning of others, the aim was to make a track with its own character that could still exist within the band's sonic universe.

Conspicuous from the rest of Bristol's electronica scene in the '90s by the absence of trip-hop or jungle leanings in their productions, Way Out West instead pursued straight-ahead house and trance with closer ties to progressive British dancefloors than American hip-hop. 

The duo of Jody Wisternoff and Nick Warren first came together in the mid-'90s. Wisternoff was a veteran producer who had first recorded at the age of 14 (with fellow Bristolian house artists Smith & Mighty), while Warren was a high-profile Balearic DJ and club-night promoter influenced by the sounds of Madchester. The duo began recording together, and by 1996 their single "The Gift" had become a big mover on dancefloors and the radio as well, thanks to a British advert that used the song. Signed to Deconstruction, Way Out West released their self-titled debut album in 1997. A change of venue, to Distinct'ive, preceded the release of 2001's Intensify, and after a three-year interim the duo followed that with the like-minded Don't Look Now.

With Warren meanwhile releasing numerous mix compilations, many of them for Global Underground, Way Out West returned in 2009 with We Love Machine. Featuring contributors such as Scuba, Jaytech, and D. Ramirez, We Love Machine: The Remixes followed on Hope Recordings a year later. Wisternoff released the solo album Trails We Blaze on Anjunadeep in 2012 and went on to mix several instalments of the label's popular compilation series. Anjunadeep also issued the Way Out West singles "Tuesday Maybe" and "Set My Mind" in 2016. With guest appearances by Doe Paoro and Liu Bei, the duo's fifth LP, Tuesday Maybe, arrived in June 2017 and was accompanied by a performance at the Glastonbury Festival. Since then, the band have embarked on a UK tour, released their Tuesday Maybe (Remixed)album, and prepared a legion of new music to release throughout 2018 - and, with more new projects in the pipeline for the next year, it's safe to say that there's never been a more exciting time to be a Way Out West fan.

Their new chill-out EP 'Sunday Maybe' is out now on digital and limited edition 12” vinyl. Catch Way Out West headlining Concorde 2 in Brighton on 3rd Oct and Rescue Rooms in Nottingham on 4th Oct.
