“Peaks and Hues” was written as a way to notate an improvisation. The technique came from a class at New England Conservatory called “Improvisation in the Style of Schoenberg,” taught by an guitarist Scott Sandvik.

The basic idea is to choose any number of players, and as a group choose a small set of pitches which make up a pitch set. The players then use the graphic notation to guide an improvisation in which dynamics, texture and range are defined by the graphics, and pitch content and rhythm are defined by the players themselves.

The result can be fascinating for solo players or groups alike. This piece was performed in 2012 by saxophone students and one percussionist at Arizona State University.

This recording was made on May 3rd, 2014, at the Knights Of Pithius Lodge in Tempe, Az. The concert merged original poetry and compositions. The music is performed by myself on piano and Ruthie Wenger on cello. Poet Ryan Van Velzer provides the spoken word.
