The stars rarely align between Gregor Tresher and Petar Dundov's hectic schedules. But when they do, techno planets collide with explosive results. This earth-shattering production partnership began in 2011 with the still-stunning "Duo Tone" EP on Music Man. A trio of releases have followed during the last three years, including the almighty "Superconductor" on Cocoon 100 last summer. Fresh for 2014, the German/Croatian pact goes next-level with this firing slab of rich, majestic techno on Gregor's own imprint Break New Soil. Living up to its name, "Taurus" ignites with bullish precision. Pummelling with a classic palpitating bass and kick roll, percussive elements are gradually introduced before the shimmering riff enters the fray. Tingling with every twist and tweak, this will raise hairs on the back of every neck with a ten mile radius. For added measure, the duo have also included the Chord mix. Galvanising the same rhythmic mischief with full focus on the undulating bass, it's slippery, slinky and drenched in drama. A perfect DJ tool to tease in with the original mix, or a heads-down mission into the darkest corners of the dancefloor: this version ripples and ruffles in equal measure. Finally we hit "Flux". Taking a slightly softer, more melodic approach, here we find Gregor and Petar weaving a tight web of rushy arpeggios and subtle rhythmic keys. Arranged with detailed dynamism, every element spirals and surges to create full crowd meltdown. A truly special release, we can't wait until Gregor and Petar's schedule stars align again!

Where Let's Go Dancing was built for the super-clubs of Ibiza, Fever is illicit, raw, tough, mid-tempo, hip-hop inflected rave-house - a million miles away from the watered-down genre it will undoubtedly be squeezed into - built around a visceral synth riff and brilliant vocal hook from Tiga, who has decidedly never sounded this bad-ass... it all rests on one of the catchiest, funkiest grooves either of the two gifted producers have ever made.

Chained to a ladder: There’s no way up. There’s no way down. You’re hung on a rung and there’s there no place to escape as Dino Lenny delves into your innermost psyche with this heavy slice of pedigree Italian electronica. A Darkroom Dubs debut from the original craftsman, ‘Chained To A Ladder’ is ominous in its mood and tone, dramatic in its new romantic vocal style and uncompromised with its devilish analogue aesthetic.

Remix-wise we’re unquestionably spoilt as label bosses Silicone Soul unleash their first production of the year with an immense 9+ minute cosmic bluesy stew, cooked slow and low with deep psychedelic flavours. A version that develops the original’s story in a stark way; this is what remixes were invented for.

Last but not least, Dino seals the deal with ‘The Right Place’. A broken drum mutant powered by technoid rocket fuel, its breakbeats drive a writhing groove that’s awash with touches of classic electro, new beat and hardcore with dark broadsword bass sweeps. Splashed with sudden blasts of synth colour, Dino’s signature sense of contrast is visceral, focused and direct. A true homage to every genre’s foundations and salute to the future; tremors can be felt from techno to drum & bass.

As the recently released ‘Darkroom Dubs Volume IV’ celebrated the last few years of releases, Dino sets the scene for another exciting chapter for the label. A chapter that will see the label continue to explore its signature atmospheric late-night sounds and celebrate its 15th anniversary this year. We’ll leave you hanging right here…

Okay, ob die mehrfach Grammy-geehrte Jazz-Ikone Al Jarreau bei seinem 86er Hit tatsächlich schon an die zwölfte Cocoon-Compilation gedacht hatte, wissen wir leider nicht. Aber dass es bei der Cocoon Compilation L um Liebe geht, steht außer Frage: Die Liebe zur elektronischen Tanzmusik, zu ihrer Vielschichtigkeit und ihrem Facettenreichtum, die Liebe zu dieser globalen musikalischen Sprache und nicht zuletzt die Begeisterung für die bekannten und noch unbekannten Protagonisten dieser klanglichen Romanze, die uns seit über 30 Jahren treu durch Nacht und Tag begleitet. Und deswegen beginnt L mit einem ausgemachten Liebeslied: Das in Berlin residierende Duo Tale Of Us hat sich für "Equilibrio" gemeinsam mit ihren derzeit schwer angesagten Förderern Seth Troxler, Ryan Crosson, Shaun Reeves und Lee Curtiss alias Visionquest ins Studio gesetzt. Herausgekommen ist dabei ein romantisches Sonett für das 21. Jahrhundert, dessen traumhaft dahin getupftes Klavier uns noch in so manchen Sonnenaufgang tragen wird – ein perfekter Start für diese Compilation. Weiter geht's mit den Tiefschwarz-Schützlingen Rampa &amp; Re.You, deren letztjähriger Clubhit "Ghost" aus der zwölften Ibiza-Season nicht wegzudenken war. Auch "Yeah Yeah Yeah feat. Meggy" betört mit einzigartigem Gespür für soulige Vocals ohne barocken Zierrat, und mit seiner deepen Orgellinie gewinnt der trocken bassbetonte Trax-House eine ungeahnte emotionale Intensität. Der Londoner DJ Tim Green, bekannt für Releases auf Four Twenty, Trapez und nicht zuletzt für seine "Lemon"-EP für Cocoon Recordings aus dem vergangenen Jahr, generiert dann bei "Curious Smile" aus verspielten Keyboards-Improvisationen clubbezogenen und irgendwie doch scheuen Pop-House. So was würde man in einer besseren Welt im Formatradio hören.
Und auch im weiteren Verlauf der Compilation wird das Füllhorn voll ausgeschüttet: Das italienische Zweiergespann Doomwork, bekannt durch Tracks für 100%Pure und Tronic, verliert sich mit perkussivem Dub, wunderschönen Flächen und Zeitlupen-Vocals lustvoll im sommerlichen Raum-Zeit-Kontinuum, Graham Goodwin aka Sian pumpt mit "East Of Eden" sein subsonisches Ravesignal klar nach vorne und dürfte damit einige Club-PAs vor echte Herausforderungen stellen, der keine stilistischen Ängste kennende Keinemusik-Act Adam Port macht seiner Vorliebe für Boogie Bass auch mit "Black Noise" alle Ehre, während DJ-Weltenbummler und Tronic-Labelchef Christian Smith (zuletzt dank seiner Remixes für Carl Craig und Underworld in aller Munde) mit tropisch kraftvoller Energie auch große Tanzflächen garantiert zum Beben bringt. Zwei perkussiv betonte Energieinfusionen der Extraklasse zelebrieren dann Mark Reeve ("Planet Green") und der Pariser DJ Paul Ritch, dessen Kernaussage "music never separated people" gar nicht oft genug betont werden kann, während das niederländische Dreamteam Secret Cinema und Peter Horrevorts überraschend industriell geprägten Techno goutiert. Das Finale übernimmt dann der neben Guy Gerber bekannteste israelische Produzent Guy J, dessen "Genesis" ganz im Stile seiner Arbeiten für John Digweeds Bedrock-Label eine perfekte Balance zwischen hypnotischer Melodie und fordernder Rhythmik findet, bevor der Leipziger Daniel Stefanik tatsächlich den letzten Schlussakkord setzt. Das über zehnminütige "Everything Goes Green" erhebt das Warten auf den rechten Augenblick zu einer Kunstform und bringt die Geduld auf, mit fragmentierter Rhythmik geraspelte Schokolade statt überbordender Süße zu intonieren. Besser kann man jedenfalls die magische Intensität einer grandiosen Afterhour nicht für alle Zeiten festhalten. Wie gesagt, ein Album zum verlieben!


Mark Reeve - Planet Green

“It's cool! It’s fun! And there’s not much music around that sounds like it!” says the unknown artist behind new project Das Spezial. This first EP has already been road tested to great effect by Stacey Pullen, Laurent Garnier, The Advent, Young Male and Henning Baer, and features collaborative appearances from The Chemical Brothers' engineer Steve Dubs and Peace Division man Justin Drake.

This project is about big, bold music that mixes up breakbeat, techno, acid and disco into razor sharp club weaponry. To that end, Maceo Plex has been a huge supporter of opener ‘Romantic Schizophrenic’, an adventurous sci-fi trip into big room techno. Loopy and eerie deep techno cut ‘Nightcrawler’ comes with its own video which you can see here, as does the strobe lit rave tune ‘Hells Angles And Prolific Demons’, which you can see here.

The superb stomper ‘Elektronisch’ is a twisted and prickly bit of electrifying techno, ‘Primitive And Civilized’ is a bristling electro tinged track with wiry synths, and that visceral energy and pure sense of abstract dance floor thrill continues with ‘Beautiful Monsters’ and ‘I Avoid Your Gaze.’ The dark wave and chilly post punk synths of ‘Only The Paranoid Survive’ and spooky drones of ‘Daphne's Window’ close things down in arresting fashion.

This is a fantastic first EP that promises plenty of standout moments on the dance floor.

Das SPEZIAL is a new project launched in 2019 that fuses the sound of house, techno, breakbeat and indie to produce a psychedelic and electronic experience. The alias comes from an anonymous artist but one who involves Steve Dubs, The Chemical Brothers engineer, plus Peace Division’s Justin Drake.

This second EP comes hot on the heels of a first and has already been supported by key players like Ewan Pearson, Justin Robertson, Red Axes, Perel and Psychemagik.

It features six to the point tracks that are fun and utterly original, such as the languid opener with its psyched-out guitar licks and rugged dark disco drums. Elsewhere there is freaky synth heavy house, big breaks with pads that will fry your brain and twisted electronica with electrifying effects and sound design. All six tracks are high impact affairs designed to bring chaos to the club, and they do so in style.

This is another strong EP that is sure to get plenty of people both talking and dancing.

Maceo Plex’s Ellum Audio rounds out the year with a fantastic two tracker from Scotland based producer Avenue.

Avenue is based on the East Coast of Scotland and was born Adrian Hossain. He has been immersed in music for 20 years, equally inspired by rock, soul and blues as he is disco, electro, techno, trance and rave. He had a busy 2020 releasing waves of new music and now lands on Ellum Audio with some brilliantly inventive new sounds and styles.

Opener ‘Ultraviolet’ is an excellently exuberant track with a party atmosphere thanks to the bristling drums and funky bass riffs. Layered over the top are epic melodic chords whilst some subtle vocal adds plenty of soul. Disco, techno and funk all collide in thrilling new ways on this most dynamic and original of tracks.

Then comes the brilliantly atmospheric ‘Infrared’, a darker, more pounding and heads down track. This is rolling techno funk run through with skewed synths that twist and contort endlessly while big hi hats and booming kicks power on into dark corners of the dancefloor. An epic breakdown builds further tension before the whole thing explodes to life once more.

This is a fine end to the year from Ellum Audio and a great statement from Avenue.
