The George Richmond Portrait Project is an ongoing project that involves my tracing of family owned portraits by Victorian portrait artist George Richmond RA (1809-1896) to private homes, in order to photograph both the portraits and their current guardians (descendents of those portrayed) in situ. In addition I am conducting interviews with my participants about what they know both of the portraits and the wo/men portrayed. 

George Richmond RA was one of the most prolific portrait artists of his generation, producing over 2,500 portraits in his lifetime - of royalty, politicians, the aristocracy and the rising merchant classes, as well as writers, artists, scentists and actors. 200 portraits by Richmond are in the National Portrait Gallery collection, an additional many more are owned by the National Trust. The bulk of them, however, are within private collections, many still owned by the same families that commissioned them in the 19th century.

Commissioned for 4 day exhibition which took place in the old Birmingham Municipal Bank Headquarters building, 14th-17th March 2013. 

Half Crowns in their Petticoats is a new audio work by Elly Clarke that was commissioned especially for this exhibition. It presents a collage of extracts of interviews that took place with former employees of the Birmingham Municipal Bank over the past three months. Most recordings took place on site in the bank itself, some at the bank’s Retirement Club and a few more in people's homes.
