Magic Bullet Records has confirmed the pending release of Helium Head, the debut recordings from MUTOID MAN, the brand new venture formed and carried out by two longtime friends, Stephen Brodsky of Cave In and Ben Koller of Converge, now joined by bassist Nick Cageao.

The high-water marks within the canon of heavy music can typically be both rapidly acknowledged and recognized by album names alone. Jane Doe, Until Your Heart Stops, Jupiter… Quite often, because of how impacting and paradigm-shifting the first listens are, fans of said albums can vividly recall the whens and wheres of the first time they encountered or purchased these works.

The energy MUTOID MAN naturally creates when they jam-out is almost unspeakable. A jacked-up album firing on all cylinders as well as a few nitro tanks and rocket boosters opened to the max, Helium Head is like classic rock on bath salts and a case of energy bars. One envisions Brodsky’s hands literally combusting as prog-fueled rock leads and hammering riffs reduce speaker cabinets to smoldering piles, his soaring vocals carrying not just an appropriately harmonious clean edge but also bringing out some of that searing wrath only the earliest of Cave In’s catalog will document. And Koller’s ridiculously intense, rabid percussive attack is of course in top form, unstoppably up-tempo and plied with more textured fills than all of Interstate 95 in both directions.

Brodsky and Koller have done it… AGAIN. Helium Head will see digital release on November 22nd followed by its CD and LP manifestations -- the wax in three different color schemes -- on Black Friday, November 29th.

Vancouver's BAPTISTS is preparing to release their second album, Bloodmines, the platter due for release via Southern Lord in North America on October 14th. Like its predecessor, BAPTISTS’ acclaimed Bushcraft debut LP, Bloodmines is an exhilarating album pouring with genuine, raw emotion and frenzied punk fury. Shards of feedback make way for rapid riffs and savage vocals, with explosive drumming surging life into every second of each movement. On tracks like "Vistas", "Calling" and the title track, "Bloodmines," the pace changes, revealing powerful, melodic and jagged noise rock songs, much like influential San Diego post-hardcore band Drive Like Jehu, which go beyond the two minute mark. Discordant guitar melodies and abrasive vocal passages are elongated, still volatile but perhaps allowing for further contemplation of the band's underlying message.

BAPTISTS continue to find ways to express their rage and explore new turf with each release, and with Bloodmines they have created a memorable and commanding album. The album was recorded and mixed by Kurt Ballou at God City Studios as with Bushcraft. The cover art was designed by Jillian Mann.

BAPTISTS will take to the North American West Coast this October on a Southern Lord tour package also including labelmates Torch Runner and Obliterations for the entire trek, as well as Offenders on select dates. As part of the routing, BAPTISTS will take part in the massive Southern Lord showcase taking place in Los Angeles, California on October 15th alongside Goatsnake, The Offenders and Xibalba in addition to Torch Runner and Obliterations. All three bands will then raid Southwest Terror Fest III: The Western Front, set to take place October 16th-19th in Tucson, Arizona, where BAPTISTS are set to perform on the main stage the final evening of the gathering with SUNN O))), Obliterations and Sex Prisoner.

Call of the Void - Failure

Single minded is a term that would aptly describe Gridlink's approach to creating music. Velocity, precision, purity - these are the tenets of their persona, combined and compacted into parcels of explosive sound-violence. In conjunction with eloquently confrontational lyrics, Gridlink's musical missives manage to utterly dominate the airspace they occupy while elevating the consciousness of the listener to supreme levels of ecstatic anxiety and heightened sensory awareness. This is the music of the apocalyptic-computer-future-world as delivered by first hand-witnesses to the horde of humanity as it draws ever closer to the edge of oblivion - a cautionary battering to capture the attention of those who might wish to move in the opposite direction. As in the words of George Orwell (who might as well have been describing the aesthetic of Gridlink's sonic knifings) "If you want a picture of the future imagine a boot stomping on a human face--forever."

While made up of musical luminaries who have proved their mettle in other much lauded musical outfits (Discordance Axis, Mortalized, Human Remains, Kill the Client, Burnt by the Sun, Hayaino Daisuki, etc), this is hardly a necessary qualifier in the face of a ferocious musical accomplishment such as Orphan. While possessing the energy, aggression, and overall focus of its predessor (2008's Amber Grey), the songs contained herein provide an ever denser and more nuanced musical assault combining short bursts of accelerated thrash, blinding passages of helicopter blasting, monochromatic smears of near-noise, and the alien howls of singer Jon Chang. In a realm of perpetrators veiled by smokescreen tactics of studio trickery and trapped in herd minded musical and socio-political maneuvering, Gridlink provide a much needed counterpoint in which sincerity, determination and artful execution triumph finally and fully.
