Synthony #1

Some deep space atmospherics from new E370 'MorphZ+Chord' mode in the 1.6 beta firmware. 

Tech notes:  Opens with movements thru the chord tables driven by a self-patched Maths at fairly high speeds, ch4 varying the range of ch1 while another Maths lightly morphs the sound - all 3 voices from a single oscillator (leaves the other three oscillators free for other duties: another 3 LFO's or 12 voices in chord mode etc)

Percussion generated from chords selected by a clocked Pressure Points and squashed with exponential Math envelopes in a crisp Malekko Boogie filter in LPG mode. 

The 'lonely outpost' sound generated from light FMing while moving thru chords, again selected with PP.

Later chord stabs are coordinated with arpeggiated versions of the same chord, a SSM sequential switch helps rotate thru each note of the chord.

TECH NOTES: A cross fade between two oscillators in 'MorphZ+Sub Mode' processed with the E520's Shimmer Reverb. 

This mode enables a secondary sub-oscillator, here a saw wave, to be set to one octave below a slowly modulated primary morphing waveform. A second modulator blends the mix of both, back and forth. 

Used the voice copy option in [Voice Settings] to clone osc1 to osc2, the clone being set one octave below the original. Slaved the XY movements of osc2 to respond to the inputs of osc1 also. These two voices slowly crossfade with a 2 phase-separated channels of the PEG controlling the 2 channels of an Optomix. 

The result is fed into a E520 Shimmer Reverb patch where an slow internal LFO (@ 1 BPM) modulates the Reverb Time parameter.

This is the third draft of a track I am working on.   This demo is good enough to let out in the wild.

For the synth nerds, this track was put together in BitWig Studio 4.  I used a Waldorf Pulse, Novation Summit, Elektron Digitakt & Octatrack MKII, Korg Wavestate and, of course, my euroroack modular system.

Scortched Earth

I was testing the new LAHD triggered envelopes, It makes it much easier to get nice percussive sounds. Osc 1 is basic sin, and osc 2 is WEdit 2Z mode. the entire thing was made while on factory wave 39. just turning tracks on and of and adjusting the knobs on the DoT. (right encoder was adjusting envelope 1 decay.) I was quite surprised with the amount of variation you can get from just 1 waveedit file.

Technical notes: I set the soundlab filter to self resonate, pinging it with Oscillator 1, then adding in Oscillator 2 and a small bit of the noise channel, modulating the filter with the LFO and modulating the VCA with the AR generator in repeat mode so it's essentially a second LFO.  The only other processing is a fade in and fade out and compression.  There's something wrong with this guy still, when I was just pinging the filter and not modulating it, it would periodically swing high in the frequency, even though there should not have been anything doing that.  But with all the other modulations, that gives this most of what motion it does have.

False Complexity: Despertares

Imagine a world.  A world like Mercury.
A small world, little atmosphere.   Rich in metals and heavy elements.

Too harsh an environment for 'life as we know it'.

But somehow,  life started under the crust where it was protected from the harsh surface conditions, and then migrated to the surface, incorporating the heavy metals and elements in its structure to protect itself.

Their cells are like tiny batteries. They power themselves from chemical energy and radio active decay.

No atmosphere, no sound...so they communicate in radio waves.

A spontaneous, almost unplanned improv. I just hit a key when I was fiddling and thought... sounds liike 2001! And I hit record and kept going. Using the Lyra-8 synthesizer through a Hyperion E-520 effects processor with reverb from an Expert Sleepers Disting EX, and recorded on an Expert Sleepers Disting Mk4
