The Canadian Film Festival is back and bigger than ever, doubling the amount of short film screenings compared to last year. This year the Canadian Film Fest will be screening 56 films in total 45 will be short films (80%).  

The Canadian Film Fest is a non-profit organization showcasing diverse  Canadian films and shorts across Canada. 

The Film Festival will run from March 18-26, 2024 at Cineplex’s Scotiabank Theatre in Toronto

The film follows two Indigenous women, fighting for their life and the lengths they are willing to go to survive.

Kiawentiio Tarbell (Gya-wuhn-dee-yo) from The Mohawk Nation of Akwesasne plays Katara in the recent live-action by Netflix Avatar: The Last Airbender.

With confirmed seasons two and three, Tarbell hopes to act out the lessons and challenges that further developed Kataria's charter. 

"With Kararia, there are such key moments throughout the show that allow her to discover herself or just grow in general... specifically, painted Lady or the Kararia Zuko episode, is something I really have my heart set on," Tarbell said.

While waiting on production, Tarbell is focused on her music and growth within her industry.

The Toronto Rock National Lacrosse League is honouring Indigenous heritage with a new Indigenous-inspired jersey created by Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory artist Kory Parkin “Kanyen’keha.”

The jersey is created with Mohawk words such as “Tkaron” meaning “the place in the water where the trees stand.” The jersey also includes six circles within the maple leaf representing all forms of life.

Parkin hopes to keep creating Indigenous-inspired jerseys and to continue to leave a legacy.

“I would love to see it be in more leagues,” said Parkins.

In recognition of the new jerseys, the Toronto Rock held a Game Worn Charity Auction at their Indigenous Heritage night game. The jerseys designed by Parkin and worn by players were auctioned in support of the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, the charity that aims to build better cultural understanding and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
