Based in Manchester, Halsall is known for being one of the leading artists of today’s UK jazz scene. Starting off by playing the trumpet in his early age, he has evolved not only into an extraordinary trumpeter, but also into an outstanding producer and composer whose distinct sound draws on foundations of spiritual jazz, meditative music, sample-fuelled electronica as well as global percussive influences. After releasing nine delicately composed albums and founding his label Gondwana Records in 2008, Halsall and his band headlined London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall last year - a manifestation of a career spent transcending boundaries and always bringing a singular, and yet ever-changing, perspective.

In our conversation, Halsall shares how his musical journey began as a passionate listener, and how the first instrument he experimented with was not the trumpet.

Here is the recording of my entire set at Rex Club in Paris (a.k.a Home) on the 15th of April 2017 for my residency "Deja-Wu" and also celebrating my 42nd Birthday. Almost 3 hours on the decks before my guest and dear friend Josh Wink would take over. <3

Manche Schallplatten fangen nach ein paar Mal abspielen plötzlich zu knistern an.

Hallo,ich bin neu hier im Rollingstone Forum und habe gleich mal eine Frage zum Thema Vinyl: bei manche neuen Schallplatten sind beim ersten Abspielen keinerlei Störgeräusche zu hören, wenn ich die Platten aber dann zwei, dreimal abgespielt habe, knistert es plötzlich an Stellen, an denen es vorher nicht geknistert hat. Ein gutes Beispiel wäre hierfür das Album Kulma von Panasonic.
Manche (ältere) Platten knistern aber fast überhaupt nicht, auch wenn ich sie zwanzig Jahre abgespielt habe.

Jetzt stelle ich mir natürlich die Frage, warum das so ist: ist es normal, dass nach ein paar Abspielvorgängen (< 5) Störgeräusche hinzukommen? Ist mein System falsch eingestellt und ich zerstöre mir damit meine Platten?

Noch ein paar Worte zu meiner Ausrüstung: habe einen Dual 704 und neues AT120E. Eingestellt habe ich den Überhang mit einer Schablone aus dem Internet, die Auflagekraft mit einer Shure SFG-2 und zur Pflege verwende ich eine Carbonbürste. Der Tonarm ist sehr leichtgängig und auch in der Innenrille hören sich die meisten Platten nicht verzerrt an.

Danke für deine Antwort, aber eine Carbonbürste habe ich bereits und eine statische Aufladung kann man denke ich ausschließen, weil die Platten dann normalerweise leicht am Teller/Matte hängen bleiben.
Die Reinigung mit destillierten Wasser + Isopropanol hat übrigens keine Veränderung gebracht, ich denke da liegt wirklich irgendwo ein mechanisches Problem vor, das die Platten beschädigt.

Momentan beschränke ich mich aufs Kaufen von Vinyl weil ich gerade Urlaub (:bier:) habe und da sowieso nicht so viel Zeit zum Plattenhören habe… bin jetzt nur am Überlegen ob ich mir dann in naher Zukunft gleich einen neuen Dreher + System holen soll (die Justage beim Dual ist schon etwas fummelig ist) oder erstmal nur ein neues System und mit dem mein Glück versuche.
