Danny Boy - Traditional Irish Folk Song

Ewan MacColl's classic folk song; originally written about Salford, Greater Manchester, England, the town where MacColl was born and brought up. It was originally composed for an interlude to cover an awkward scene change in his 1949 play Landscape with Chimneys, set in a North of England industrial town, but with the growing popularity of folk music the song became a standard.

This is an extension of the song “The spark” told from the perspective of the husband.

“She wants the night” tells the story of a hardworking man who comes home weary, longing for stillness and reflection, while his wife craves the energy and excitement he no longer has the strength to chase. 

It’s a quiet heartbreak—one built not on betrayal, but on emotional distance, as their shared dreams drift in opposite directions. A classic country ballad of fading connection, responsibility, and silent sacrifice.
