Over a year in the making, MOON ROCK VOLUME 1 is the first in a series of compilations assembled by THRONE OF BLOOD RECORDINGS geared to explore the outer reaches of electronic ambience, cosmische vibrations, and crystalline acoustics. Sparked by their shared love of ambient classics, label head JAMES FRIEDMAN and long-time TOB artists COSMIC KIDS put out a call for new and unreleased drones, beatless versions, and arpeggiated chillout tackle.

The results were simply staggering, with enough chakra-stimulating spacemusic manifesting to fill several double LPs. The first in this surprise series is but a sampling, a quick meditation on the most meditative of electronic music featuring tracks from Juju & Jordash, DAMH (David Hasert and Ada), Simian Mobile Disco, Jokers of the Scene, Naum Gabo, Professor Genius, Pittsburgh Track Authority, Auf Togo (featuring In Flagranti’s Sasa Crnobrnja), Lexx, Steve Moore, RL/VL (a teenage alias of Space Dimension Controller), and Evan Stalker.

Drawing linkages between New Age, Ambient, Sci Fi Soundtracks, 90s Chillout and the most psychotropic strands of modern analogue dance music, MOON ROCK is music for comedowns, meditation retreats, and adventures beyond the Ultraworld. Tune in and space out…

Sjoerd Kerkstra (Kerkstra) is an accomplished musician and producer from the Netherlands. When asked about his musical influences, he lists an eclectic bunch that includes the likes of Dmitri Shostakovich, Maurice Ravel, Steve Reich, Charlie Rouse, Milton Nascimento, Jai Paul, Machinedrum and Q-Tip. 

In Havana, Sjoerd teamed up with the vocal ensemble Sexto Sentido. “I knew I wanted to work with Sexto Sentido about 30 seconds into the Youtube home video of them casually singing 'Canto a Elegguá',” he remarks. “It took me about 10 minutes and three replays to close my mouth.”

Square Pegs, Round Holes: 5 Years of SNATCH! is a new mix album celebrating the 5th anniversary of one of the most individual, unpredictable and dynamic record labels in dance music, boasting 15 previously unreleased records and 15 SNATCH! classics.

Square Pegs, Round Holes: 5 Years of SNATCH! has been personally compiled and mixed by Riva Starr and includes 15 previously unreleased records, as well as 15 of the best-loved tracks from the label’s history: a fitting celebration of an imprint without which the dance music landscape would be decidedly less diverse.

Says Riva Starr of the new compilation: “I asked all the family crew to cook up their best possible plates and also wanted to involve some friends of the label, people I respect as producers. The result for me is amazing: I’m really proud of it and couldn’t think to a better way to celebrate our first 5 years.

“With SNATCH! We have managed to have our own sound and approach to music, and people really recognize it. in the past I’ve had producers tell me, “Hey I just did this tune and I think it sounds very SNATCH!”… and I’m like a proud dad!

With each successive volume of Throne of Blood’s MOON ROCK compilations, the New York label attains a deeper appreciation of electronic music’s most chakra-massaging tendencies, participating in a communal dialogue devoted to a new dynamic beyond the confines of the dance floor.

Sharing a spiritual and aesthetic kinship with a burgeoning community of psychonauts and astral voyagers like Multi Culti, Emotional Response’s Scheißen series, Andras Fox’s A.R.T. Wilson project, MOON ROCK VOLUME 3 casts a wide net, folding in crystalline contributions from label veterans like Steve Moore, Ulysses, Curses, Luv*Jam, Anti Hero (aka Chris McIntyre from Jokers of the Scene), Clean Plate (aka Pink Skull), Tempelhof, and Pittsburgh Track Authority, as well as expansive contributions from friends like Stone’s Throw affiliate Chrome Canyon, LA mainstays Kisses and Anzano, testpressing.org’s Apiento & Co., CCC’s Night Plane, Peacefeast mailman Tim Love Lee, and Hivern Discs’s C.P.I.

Pushing beyond the terrain so capably explored in Volumes 1 and 2, MOON ROCK VOLUME 3 begins in a familiar place with cyclical arpeggios and orchestration deeply indebted to Brian Eno. An interlude of reverb-drenched percussion and harp segues into cinematic synths and a series of selections rooted in the low slung rhythms of chillout. Fluctuations in intensity slowly give way to a darker tone as more unnerving drones and atmospheres close out this fifteen track selection.

As always, MOON ROCK is music for comedowns, meditation retreats, and adventures beyond the Ultraworld. Tune in and space out...

"I’ve always been sensitive to my surroundings and the world is in a very vulnerable place at the moment. I felt I needed to express my true emotions through something a little bit different to a conventional DJ mix and also that just writing one song was not going to be enough.

It was almost like composing a score, the only difference being that the pictures were only in my head. My ambition was for the music to evoke a visual response in the listener rather than just an emotional one. To do that I took some audio snippets of real life current affairs scenarios that really struck a chord in me and then used my DJ instinct to think of a track/musical piece that would fit well to that particular scene. Sometimes when I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted I added my own music over existing music or did my own sound design to create my own sound effects and also wrote some original pieces in the moment. It was very important to me to create ultimate flow and I felt this could only have been achieved without having any beats supporting the music. I also didn't want to make it eclectic nor constant as I felt that would disrupt the listener’s focus emotionally. There is a strong dynamic range throughout similar to classical music and also some parts that are almost meditative and then in contrast some more intense moments.

At the end of every year most labels and publications look back and reflect on what has come before, re-packaging old tracks together or making top ten lists. IÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢m always trying to find some big new records at the end of the year so I can go play something fresh, so IÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢d like to present the DIRTYBRD New Years Special. 

Here are seven new bangers for your holiday DJ sets. The tracks are all new & most of them are by new talents on the label. Fresh faces include veteran German producer David Keno, an all new act called Jaded, Sirus Hood from Paris, My Cat Snoop, Mikey V, Wood Holly & Sage Armstrong.  Of course we have a few guys who have been on the label before, Ardalan, Genghis Clan, and Nick Olivetti.

All the tracks work great in the club which was the main criteria for the compilation, no headphone b-sides here (although we still love those too!). Happy holidays to everyone.

Artiste en résidence à l’Université de Montpellier jusqu’en avril, il vient faire ce qu’il aime : explorer des chemins nouveaux, dans cette « cité au cœur de la cité » avec ses 45 000 étudiants et ses 4 500 personnels.

Pendant plusieurs mois, Leonardo et ses interprètes vont vivre parmi ces habitants de la planète université : les côtoyer, les observer. Les étudier. « Questionner les gestes du quotidien, précise-t-il : ceux des étudiants, des enseignants, des chercheurs, des personnels. Gestes de transmission, de métier, mais aussi de réflexion, d’impatience… ».

The days are longer and lighter already and that can only mean one thing. Summer is on its way…
 
Lee Burridge and Lost Desert return with sunshine days in mind on their ‘Loopyness’ EP.  An apt description indeed for the title track. Its infectious groove rolls forward, making you want to get up and wiggle your hips; this track has funk. A live guitar lifts the track halfway through, as stuttered vocals and string-like synth lines take you away to other worlds. 
 
Over on the other side of the vinyl (or track two for digital fans) is ‘Botanic’. Another summer daze; groovy, light and airy with a slinky fat bassline and a warm breakdown. Music to close your eyes and drift away to, this track has been a firm favourite on All Day I Dream dance floors since last summer. 
 
The EP comes to a close with ‘12CC’. A dubbier groove underpins the whole affair while glass-like melodies and laid back synths sway back and forth. It’s a patient groover that rewards those who take the ride.
