Hosted by @clubserviss in a new location called "Diagonāle" just before Christmas yours truly played a bit over two hours of some of the stuff that stood out this year in music that is akin to dark rooms and movement (even if it were in one's own mind). This should not be considered the classic "yearmix" that Elvi Soulsystems is used to doing – this is just a pretty impulse-driven DJ set that happened to have the constraints of not playing anything that has come out earlier than 2021. It was pretty hot in the studio-type basement space that this was recorded in, so don't judge on the skipping of rhythm at some points there. Love!

Patricia Kokett follows up two critically-acclaimed esoteric techno releases on Knekelhuis (Bizarr [2020], Diabel [2018]) with a new EP – Psykhe – to be released by Isla to Isla on the 25th of april 2023 as a 12” vinyl and digital.

Psykhe sees Lithuanian musician and composer Gediminas Jakubka continuing to explore his own distinct sound, but taking it in a new direction: a step away from the euphoric new age dance floor and into a significantly murkier, more precarious territory. Psykhe is meant as a sonic simulacrum of the artist's psyche during the pandemic – a quickened mind bred by a decelerated world. In that and other senses, the record is a modern take on the ‘80s/’90s Detroit ethos of dance music created for an illusory dance floor.

Incidentally (or not!), Psykhe is much more electro-based and darker – intent on delivering catharsis, but not euphoria.

Will Hofbauer has been carving out his idiosyncratic niche in dance music for the past few years, with releases on Rinse FM, Wisdom Teeth and his Third Place seeing critical acclaim as well as high-profile co-signs from the likes of Ben UFO, rRoxymore, Lukas Wigflex, Dr Banana and now, Will Saul and his indomitable Aus Music imprint.
Hofbauer’s ‘Ah! Bats!’ is up first on ‘Four! Beats!’, featuring a speedy dembow beat, rowdy vocal chops, and call-back, signature use of subtle animal sounds that fit right in. The aptly named ‘8 Bar Baile’ is next, a baile funk track built up like 8 bar grime, swapping rhythm in every section for a high-energy, peak-time affair.
Smooth and introspective house cut ‘Scrumble’ then sees whimsical bursts of synths splash on top of delicate drums before Will Hofbauer’s ‘Moss On’ dives deeper underwater with loose arrangement and tripped-out instrumentation.
