This is something that I don't normally do... Improvising. There are couple of reasons why I try not to improvise, but the main reason is this. It could get messy. Since 90% of the time, I am going with the flow and pressing the keys that my heart is telling me to press, sometimes the sound comes out bearable, while most of the times, sounds like total crap LOL.

Like the title says, this piece is about me talking with God. This may sound little weird that I am talking with God, to some of you, but it is what it is. It was about 1 or 2 in the morning. Fairly early for me. This is when I am most alert and focused, due to the absolute silence that visits my house. I wanted to have a conversation with God through music and record it. 

The concept is simple. I create a simple drum beat and loop it. Turn on the keyboard, and just play.

Hope you guys enjoyed this piece. For an improvisational piece, I thought it came out okay, which is why I am uploading it. Haha!

"Avalanche" is personally my way of getting over a bad relationship with someone. I have been having hard time focusing on life because of the damage this said person have left behind. I've looked back and gathered every little information I could gather and compiled them into a story, and now, an album. I've always associated my built up emotions, both positive and negative, as this big, tall, snow covered, mountain, where the snow were on the verge of collapsing, causing a devastating avalanche. I felt like my heart was a gentle breeze away before collapsing and turning my life into a big mess. I've confessed my heartaches and emotion crisis to God, and through series of challenges and learning experiences, I've came to realize, this is just a phase in my life that will eventually pass. 

You see, no specific hardship is eternal. As cliche as this may sound, when we experience a perfect sunny day, we must also expect a storm somewhere in the future. Given that I am nocturnal, I coped with a lot of these heartaches in the late night. This was when I had the most intimate moment with God and surrounded myself with His compassion and comfort. The tracks are arranged in certain ways to tell my story of battling this horrible darkness that was trying to consume me. 

The battle comes to an end with the title track, "Avalanche." This track is about me facing my troubled heart, the heart that is about to collapse. It is about me yelling at this troubled, snow covered, mountain, and watching it collapse before me. It is about letting all my built up emotions go free. It is about becoming free from being imprisoned in my own heart. 

I have been working on this album for a long time, and there's a good reason for that. It takes good time for someone to carefully study the emotions that they have felt in the past, and analyze them thoroughly to translate them into songs. So, the question remains, "Am I over this person?" I do not know the answer to this question. There's a saying, "Time heals all wounds" and honestly, I wouldn't say that I am completely over my heartaches. However, having expressed my emotions, it is safe for me to say that, I feel much better and more "lively" for lack of better words. 

I hope you guys will enjoy this album. It is something personal, something meaningful, and something beautiful. Wishing everyone who's going through similar pain right now, a good luck and wellness. Thanks for all of your amazing support, and I will catch you guys on my next release.

The Stargazer's Scrapbook

I suppose I've experienced "love at first sight" recently. The idea of being captivated by someone's beauty, who you've never talked to before, or even barely knows the person's name, brings out all sorts of mixed feelings from within. Part of me makes me go "Hmm, wow.. she's purrty" whereas other part of me goes "What the hell is wrong with me?" LOL

I couldn't work up the courage to talk to her; and that's okay. I hope to see her again in the future, and if not, that's okay too. 

While a handful doesn't believe in "love at first sight," a great handful of others do. I personally don't think I necessarily fell in love after one glance of this said person. I think I was just captivated by her beauty and started to think about various possibilities that could happen in my life with this person.

Your Ghost

Hope you guys had a lovely mother's day. I feel like most of us doesn't appreciate our moms. In my case, I rarely see or talk to my mom. You see, when she comes home from work, I am at school. When I come home from school, she is getting ready to sleep. She wakes up as early as 6am to go to work every day. All for what? I wonder this so many times.

In Korea, she could live with her husband, teaching little children piano, have fun surrounded by her friends and family. But, in order to provide a better future for me and my brother, she gave up all those luxury to live in a foreign land. Going through many ridicules and pain, she keeps her mouth closed, not saying anything, in fear of making me worry.

I often wonder, perhaps she wouldn't be going through so much pain and hardships if I wasn't born. If I never existed, she could still be in Korea, following her passion with the man she loves so much. I remember sharing this thought with her when I was in 4th grade. She looked me in the eyes and said "You and your brother are worth every hardships that the world throws at me. There's nothing more your father and I want other than you guys' happiness."

How unworthy am I to have you, mom. I find God's great love for me through yours, daily. How can I describe how much I love and appreciate you? Words are simply not enough. So.. I tell you how much I love you through the language I know best.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to just float, motionlessly, through the endless cosmos? Our lives could easily become hectic and at any moment, we could feel burnt out and lose motivation to continue. With the finals approaching, preparing to go out into the nation for mission works, preparing to transfer into a university, etc. my life has been feeling way too crazy and to be honest with you, I feel very overwhelmed. In fact, it has gotten so bad that I actually took a day off to just meditate alone in silence. I turned off my phone, turned off my light, and just sat on my chair - losing myself in my own mind. I pictured myself gently, weightlessly, floating across the universe. Seeing the pretty colors, seeing the countless stars, admiring different astronomical debris, it was very... peaceful. I just wished I had my special companion next to me, but unfortunately, she's not with me at the moment.

The point is this. I think it's a beautiful thing to acknowledge our limits and spend, at least 5 minutes, in absolute silence in our own mind. Like what Calvin said to Hobbes, looking up at night sky, decorated with countless stars, "If people sat outside and looked at the stars each night, I'll bet they'd live a lot differently [...] When you look into infinity, you realize that there are more important things than what people do all day."

This song goes out to everyone who has someone in their mind, but doesn't know how to approach them -- whether it is due to fear, doubts, timing, past experiences. Instead of worrying about "how to holler effectively," why not take a minute to study their minutiae (noun. Precise details; small or trifling matters)? 

Elyon - Studying Her Minutiae

This is my musical interpretation of what it feels like to long for someone from the distance. What it's like to have insanely-flustering affections toward someone but don't have the slightest idea of how to effectively approach the person. Instead of strategizing, admire the person: Study what makes them smile and what makes them frown. Study their likes and dislikes. Learn about their hobbies, learn about their culture, learn about their facial expressions based on their feelings. Listen more and speak less. Take notes and pay attention to every details, no matter how minuscule. Enjoy the person's presence, talk to learn, not to make them "fall" for you. Study that person's minutiae, every little details... but..... don't be a creep about it.

Studying Her Minutiae

A friend and I were talking about "Lo-fi" hiphop genre and about how it's becoming "popular" again. I personally enjoy listening to this genre but never tried creating something in it. "Lo-fi," meaning "Low Fidelity," adds that "gritty" and "low quality" sound that used to be all around us in the 90's and before. Now days, everything's HQ or HD, we have CDs instead of cassette tapes or vinyls, DVD players or online streaming instead of VHS players. I had a warm fuzzy feeling inside as I was creating this. It reminded me of my childhood, back when everything was "ordinary" and "innocent."

The word andante simply means "moderately slow tempo." Time has been moving way too fast for me, lately. It's time to take a little breather and refresh. Looking back, though tough, I had a really nice and a blessing of a childhood. Something that I'll never be able to relive and experience. I have to thank God for always being there, guiding me. Though I forget His presence and though I sometimes lose track of where I'm suppose to go, He never failed to show me His grace and patient love. I wish I could be more loving and caring like Him. I wish I could be a better friend to my friends. I wish I could be a better person. But the day of sunrise is nigh. Thank you to everyone who's been talking to me and checking up on me. Thank you for even sending me some encouraging words regarding music or life. I appreciate every one of you guys, supporting me in my musical endeavors.

This beat is based on a love story..

Angelina was who everyone called a “Beauty Queen”, for she presented a ‘perfect beauty’ that would keep everyone staring at her for hours in awe. She worked as a singer at a jazz club. She would wear flashy outfits which caused even the low dimmed lights would reflect off of her like a light would to a diamond. Wherever she went, heads were turned… Before her, there were banquet of flowers, boxes of chocolate, false confessions, expensive gifts, and much more. But behind her were countless pieces of broken heart, wittered roses, and broken shards. She broke people’s heart for they broke hers in the past. Though she possessed an incredible beauty, she was miserable and felt like as if she was cursed…

This went on until she met a boy who stood out from the rest. Like others, this boy too fell in love with Angelina but, he was different, way too different. He did not confess anything, nor gave her any expensive gifts, but simply his love. He might be the first one to ever love her for who Angelina truly was. Though she recognized this, her dark past, confusion, and pain continued to attack her heart.
The beat is based on that story, and the texts in the video, is a letter the boy is writing to Angelina.
I ask you listeners, to close your eyes, let the melodies and drum beats speak to you..

A couple of friends and I had this idea of giving ourselves 30 minutes to make something. It was our first time doing something like this and it was an eye-opening experience for me, personally. I haven't touched my keyboard in a long time to make something and it really showed.
