While I was composing my F-sharp minor Fantasy, I found myself stuck on a particular middle section, struggling to find the right variation to complete the piece. Eventually, I succeeded, but before that happened, I wrote numerous segments that didn’t quite fit into the piece.

Fortunately, some of these discarded variations began to resonate with each other, leading to the creation of smaller pieces that I grew very fond of. The first of these became my Prelude in F-sharp Minor, and the second, the Moment Musicaux in A Major.

These two compositions share some motivic figures down to the note, yet in feeling and meaning, they couldn’t be more different. Despite the brief scope of the Moment Musicaux in question, I believe there is much to discover within it, with every new small section providing something unique and unexpected.

Moment Musicaux for Piano, A Major

Into your ball.
No shadow to cast on the wall.
Into your dreams.
Blue and rocking, like the sea had been that night.

The dawn adorns.
You feel just like you're floating alone.
Turn 'way from light.
Just give me another moment alone with the night.

The sky grows pale.
Find your spot underneath the sail.
The rocks surround.
An undulating mass of dry ground sprung up out of the night

The paths where all the people must go.
They hurry by.
Their shadows so long as they emerge from the dark of the night.

Floating in the un-ending night.
