A simple truth

"Wees Uself." That was the school motto we lived by at Hoërskool Jan van Riebeeck between 2000 and 2003. For us, "being ourselves" meant spending every spare hour in a small, repurposed storeroom at the bottom of the school garden, past the tennis courts and the swimming pool.
These recordings are the artifacts of that time. Ivanhoe was born out of a landscape of "pretty cool" punk-rock school bands and a desperate need for a space where our unique passions could take flight. Originally starting as a "girl band," the final lineup featured myself (Elzahn Rinquest), Renée Rossouw, Danie Lüdick, and Andor Hanekom.
The Sound: This is Afrikaans Alternative Rock in its rawest form. These aren't polished studio tracks; they are live-tracked demos recorded as a band with no mixing or mastering. They capture the "onbeskaamde bravade" (unabashed bravado) of teenagers who didn't necessarily know what they were doing but did it anyway with everything they had.
From practicing the same three songs over and over for the Jip Rockspaaider heats to the daily commute to school, this music was the heartbeat of our friendships. It represents a "punk-rock phase" full of creativity, and the intense search for identity that defines the teenage years.
These 11 tracks are more than just demos; they are a sonic map of a "new generation" finding their way.
