Zadie Smith writes New York...what else is there to say? I agree, I wholeheartedly agree, though I am not sure how useful I always find the delusion she refers to throughout this wonderful essay. A fun side note - I am pretty sure I used to babysit for some professor-friends in the very same tower where this essay begins. Well, one of them. If only my professor-friends had lived there longer or later! I might have run into Zadie Smith on the playground. Then I wouldn't have even needed the babysitting wages. 

The image is not, of course, from Manhattan. As always, it is from Alexandria, via the photographer Amy Elshaarawy. However, I think you will agree that these two have found their beach.

Reading is an embodied act. Reading out-loud is an imaginative and active creation of the mind.  Through hearing the words, our imaginations go to work and transport us from where we are to a new place. As a collective we have found much joy in reading and hearing others read. 

We have created this space as a way of sharing and engaging with various readings so we can enjoy and understand them better.  As performers we believe that when it comes to perceptive processes; knowledge is embodied. Therefore this embodied reading project. 

We have collected a number of voices, accomplices, to read with,  and for us from different spaces, places and curriculums. We believe that reading out aloud harnesses our ability to know via the performative. Please join us to reimagine how we can re-ignite love for reading, engage with reading and imagine what a decolonial creative reading project would look like. This is an ongoing project,  and we open to ALL sorts of readings please email us at embodiedreading@gmail.com 

How to get involved 
Please send us your recording of yourself reading an essay or story. The excerpt  should be 2 mins long – 5 mins if we are pushing it. (think copyright).
