Black Art in America™ Poetry Showcase featuring performance poets Ngoma and Tantra-zawadi

Poets, activists and meaningful thinkers, Ngoma and Tantra-zawadi use culture, words and music to explore socio-political issues and spiritual consciousness encouraging analytical thought.  These seasoned artists have both appeared at the Badilisha Poetry X-Change Festival in Cape Town, South Africa with other uplifting voices spanning the globe.  Purpose being freedom and awareness, Ngoma and Zawadi’s work reflects upon the power of poetry for a conscious world.

Tantra-zawadi, the author of three books of poetry and an international performance poet, has presented to standing room audiences around the world. She has performed original works off-Broadway and featured at The Badilisha Poetry X-Change Festival in Cape Town, South Africa, Lincoln Center, American Museum of Natural History, The Montserrat Poetry Festival, The Daniel Sorano National Theatre and The Austin International Poetry Festival.  Tantra is a 2010 Pushcart Prize nominee for her poem “Girl,” a recipient of the Kings County District Attorney’s Women’s History Month Award, and in 2014, received the honor of Pan African Princess.  As a mentor for the Girl-Child Network Worldwide, she is donating a portion of the proceeds from her books to GCN.  Tantra-zawadi performs regularly with The Senegal-America Project, aappears on several global music compilations and publications including Essence Magazine.  She is the director of two short documentaries, and her poem and video “Scarlet Waters,” was featured on the Product(RED) video wall to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS in Africa. Ngoma is a performance poet, multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter and paradigm shifter, who for over 40 years has used culture as a tool to raise socio-political and spiritual consciousness through work that encourages critical thought.  A former member of Amiri Baraka's "The Spirit House Movers and Players" and the contemporary freedom song duo "Serious Bizness," Ngoma weaves poetry and song that raises contradictions and searches for a solution to a just and peaceful world. Ngoma was the Prop Slam Winner of the 1997 and National Poetry Slam Competition in Middletown, CT.  Ngoma has been published in African Voices Magazine, Long Shot Anthology, The Underwood Review, Signifyin' Harlem Review, Bum Rush the Page/Def Poetry Jam Anthology, Poems on the Road to Peace (Volumes 1,2,and 3 - Yale Press), and Let Loose On the World-Amiri Baraka at 75, The Understanding Between Foxes and Light-Great Weather For Media, and New Rain/Blind Beggar Press 35th Anniversary Issue. He was featured in the P.B.S spoken word documentary, The Apropoets with Allen Ginsburg and has curated and hosted the poetry slam at the Martin Luther King Family Festival of Social and Environmental Justice at the Yale/Peabody Museum since 1995. Ngoma was also selected to participate in the 2009 Badilisha Poetry Xchange in Cape Town, South Africa.

Philip Emeagwali lived in refugee camps during the 1967-70 Nigerian-Biafran War and is in the Gallery of Prominent Refugees of the United Nations. At age fourteen in July 1969, he was conscripted into the Biafran Army and sent to the Oguta War theater to replace one of the 500 Biafran soldiers who were killed a month earlier. In the list of the worst genocidal crimes of the 20th century committed against humanity, the death of one in fifteen Biafrans was ranked fifth.

Due to the Nigerian Civil War, Philip Emeagwali dropped out of school for five years but developed a reputation in Onitsha (Nigeria) as a gifted teenager. He caught the attention of American scholars and was  awarded a scholarship on September 10, 1973, to the United States where he researched for two decades and contributed to mathematics, physics, and computer science. Philip Emeagwali is in the top ten rankings of geniuses, inventors, Nigerians, and was voted the 35th greatest African of all time.
