MIXALOT

Against the backdrop of the global pandemic that radically altered her everyday reality and the Black Lives Matter movement that sharpened her focus on black equity and erasure in dance music, the much-loved London-born, Manchester-based producer and DJ launched OTMI. While this genre-spanning label will release music from friends and collaborators, its debut release came from Anz herself as 001 explored the processes of coming un-done and rebuilding. Hard relate. At the beginning of lockdown, the industrious talent set herself the target of making 40 tracks and by the summer she had channeled her closed club frustrations to amass 74 tracks to soundtrack these unprecedented times. Throughout it all, Anz has played her signature blend of bass, UK funky, breakbeats, ghetto tech and electro selections once a month on her NTS Manchester show. As she’s been a regular of the station for half of its life, who better to close its 10.10 Store Mix takeover? Just as Manchester International Festival (MIF) announced her as one of the acts for its Homecoming Live night, Anz – who spends so much of her time recording club mixes –  wanted to share something different. Here, she wants you to take it easy with 65 minutes of “stone cold classics”.

Crack Mix 448: Chloé Robinson

Emerald is a name that should be familiar to any Rinse FM devotee—she's been DJing on the UK dance music radio giant since 2014, and has just started a new flagship slot called The Dance Show on Friday nights. The Londoner is a consummate radio DJ, blending together genres and tempos with pitch-perfect mixing and an ear for hooks that makes each track stand out. (She calls herself "genre fluid.")

She's said so much in the lengthy, excellent interview below, so we can keep this part brief. Her RA Podcast combines newer favorites from Lauren Flax, Queer On Acid and Neil Landstrumm with older, recently acquired records from DJ Deeon (1994) and FSOM (1992). In the last couple of years, London's SHERELLE (@iamsherelle)has torn through the dance music world like a tornado. Everything she does is high speed and high impact, from what she mixes to the way she mixes it. Her dizzying mix of footwork, jungle and drum & bass has breathed new life into the 160bpm scene and got people all over Europe in a spin. As well as solo work, she plays as part of the 6 Figure Gang and runs the Hooversound Recordings label with Naina while also championing all things leftfield on her BBC Radio 1 residency. 

Of course, her 80 minute mix for us is pure fire, a bumping ride through thrilling kick patterns, shimmering toms and drilling bass. It's underpinned with a constant sense of tension that keeps you utterly on the edge of your seat and variously explodes into life, or pulls back to a moment of unsettling calm. It tells the story of a rich history of UK music, but with a fresh perspective that makes it all the more vital.
