Forgive the couple of clunkers and laptop mic; I was rusty (had been living in the woods for several months, not hyperbole) and had this idea while I had access to a piano, and I had to get it out there.

Cover of an original song by my friend Ryan Stitzel, in his Ukulele Sunday series on YouTube. I love the Bad Religion influence this song has musically (we share great fondness for the band!), and I love the half-serious-half-sarcastic sort of self-parodying tone that it takes, much like "Cool to Hate" by The Offspring and "Lipstick" by Guttermouth. Definitely want to do a full electrified-and-drum-set version one day.

I learned this song from folk musician friends over potlucks, around ten years ago. I know a few of the words are different from popular recorded versions.

This is probably the first time I've touched an acoustic guitar for more than ten seconds since my beloved one was stolen three years ago. I felt that "Sweet Misery" was a good choice for my first recorded song, because it's about being hurt, and then healed by the good things in life.

I'm obviously rusty on the guitar work, and the whole thing is raw and messy and low-quality, but I'm okay with it. (I did it in just one take anyway.) I'm just glad I'm growing the balls to put up anything at all. So, ta-da ... welcome to my very first solo track of all time.

Sweet Misery (old folk song, AFAIK)

I know I'm kinda taking an easy road by starting out with folk, since it's familiar, but I'm having a cathartic time getting back to my vocal roots.

I threw this down in one shot too, only patched over one phrase. This is probably my staple karaoke hit, so I'd venture to guess it's a little better after a couple of shots, but hey, I like how it turned out.

All mad luvz go to Janis Joplin. "Me and Bobby McGee" got me a $20 bill from a dude once when I was busking. That might be one of my next recordings.

I just looked up this song recently, hadn't really ever run through it, just fiddled with it enough to know how I wanted to strum it, but I felt like getting a quick take of the way it came to me, especially since I rarely do any quiet songs. Couple flat notes, didn't really think about finding room to breathe in all those "na"s lol, but I like it. I'm sure that musically this isn't original and there are probably a million covers out there that have taken an approach like this, so it's not intended to knock off any of those, it's just what came naturally. :P I don't know what the lyrics are intended to be about, but I decided not to look that up, because I'm happy with what they mean to me personally right now. :)

I know it's unpro to make excuses, but I sorta want it to be known that I'm using someone else's acoustic that isn't in great shape, and I tracked the guitar part back a couple of weeks after I broke my hand when I shouldn't have been playing, so that line is a little clunky ... I was just too lazy to redo a new one today, I couldn't wait any longer to do the vocals and get this up. Also, this is my very first recording ever that I didn't record all at once in a single take but rather tracked out and patched bits, so there are occasional moments where one can hear the patchingness, but I wasn't gonna obsess about it. I just wanted to get the idea out there. Hope it's likeable!
