Three Miniatures for String Quartet. Recorded by Fulcrum Point New Music Project on March 15th, 2017, Chicago.

I wrote these short compositions in the fall of 2016. Writing miniatures was a new experience for me, and I wanted to take the opportunity to develop gestures suited for string instrumentation. 

Each miniature has its own unique character. The first is bittersweet and dissonant. The second is comical and fun. The third and final miniature is a peaceful closure which ties all three pieces together in one underlying soundscape.

Three Miniatures

This is my first piece using Ableton Live software. The audio is sampled by the original "Ghosting" by the band Mother Mother. I learned to manipulate these samples and put them together to create my own "Ghosting".

Ghosting

"Prelude" (2014) is one of my earlier pieces composed during my sophomore year of college. It is lyrically and harmonically rich and gave me a chance to experiment modulation between keys. This composition also captures a stunning tone I had been striving to accomplish since I started composing at ten years old.

Prelude

"Violet" (2015) recorded at my Senior Recital on April 21, 2017. I challenged myself to write for alto saxophone and then perform with it as well. Violet focuses on harmony and achieves beauty in simplicity.

"if strangers meet" (2017) for 2 voices and percussion

In this piece, I strive to capture the fluttery feeling of love at first sight while experimenting with visual representations of musical expression through physical gestures and specific staging requirements. This is also the third and final piece of my set of E.E. Cummings pieces. 

This performance was a collaboration with members from Mocrep Ensemble in Chicago on April 21st, 2017.

Aspiring Fires

An arietta is a short aria. In opera, an aria is a long accompanied song for a solo voice. Even though this short piece is played using one instrument, it is meant to be played as if there were a solo voice and accompaniment. Short and sweet, this arietta is the first of a collection of lyric pieces by Edvard Grieg.

Arietta, Op. 12, No.1

This famous nocturne from another collection of Edvard Grieg's lyric pieces, is the quintessential example of night music. Soothing and stunning, this piece sets the mood from the first phrase. Although this piece has also been arranged for full orchestra as the Lyric Suite, its romantic harmonies are simply beautiful for the instrumentation of solo piano.

Nocturne, Op. 54, No.4

Shulamit Ran wrote these short duet pieces in her mid-teens. Each piece captures a unique character and emotion. The first two are fast and sweet, and the second two are ominous and slow. The last piece, the toccata, is lively and shows off the performer’s touch and technique.

Emily Michielutti is a composer, pianist, and educator located in Chicago. Her music emphasizes extended techniques and timbres with acoustic instrumentation. She strives to utilize these sounds in beautiful ways by incorporating a love for harmony and delicate gestures. In addition, she creates super-instruments by blending sounds from individual instruments, contributing to the compositional variety and timbres in her work. As a performer herself, Emily has a unique perspective and valuable insights in writing her compositions with the performer in mind.
