Lesbian Films Emily likes will be the pilot show of this radio series, commissioned by Montez Press Radio, looking at films Emily Pope perceives to be lesbian and the respective soundtracks to these films, in relation to what it means to be a slightly obsessive weird child in a rural area, looking for content that might provide an answer, or would at least provide some kicks. Episode 1 starts the journey amidst the bible belt of the USA. 

Emily Pope is an artist based in London. She is currently interested in representations of economic precarity, subverting the character of the female comic, script writing, class conciousness, experimental film making and has recently completed making her sitcom; The Sitcom Show. Exhibitions & projects include: The Sitcom Show at Peak Gallery; Millenialism at Paradise Works; Time for Success at Tate Britain, Episode 4 - The Keyboard Lesson, Becky’s London; the White Pube online residency; ASP, ICA London; Episode 1 - The Court Summons, Ladette Space, London; Tarantellegra, Hester, New York; and together with Ruth Angel Edwards: Got 2 B, an ongoing radio collaboration.

Lesbian Films Emily Likes Episode 1 - Pilot

Lesbian Films Emily Likes is a podcast developed for Montez Press Radio, looking at films Emily Pope perceives to be lesbian and the respective soundtracks to these films, in relation to what it means to be a slightly obsessive weird child in a rural area, looking for content that might provide an answer, or would at least provide some kicks. Episode 2 takes a specific look at scenes where the characters are driving in cars, a movie motif symbolising escape from the patriarchy, often resulting in the exact opposite.

Emily Pope is an artist working in film, sound, performance, writing and printmaking. She hosts and directs a comedy night called You Can’t Blame a Girl For Trying. She previously collaborated on a radio project Got 2 B Radio with Ruth Angel Edwards between 2015 and 2019, which covered ‘current events’ in relation to sub- and pop- culture, and was broadcast on Resonance fm and Comet Radio. Her most recent work is a film series called The Sitcom Show, which interrogates the commodification and production of the character of the female ‘offbeat’ comic within contemporary media, and produced a personal and experimental documentation of austerity Britain using parody to investigate characterisations of the precarious worker.

Lesbian Films Emily Likes looks at films Emily Pope perceives to be lesbian and the respective soundtracks to these films, in relation to what it means to be a slightly obsessive weird child in a rural area, looking for content that might provide an answer, or would at least provide some kicks. Episode 3 discusses The Colour Purple, and Fried Green Tomatoes at The Whistle Stop Cafe, taking a specific look at the lives and loves of the authors who wrote the books which became the films.

Lesbian Songs, Shows and Stories Emily Likes is a one-off episode developed for Montez Press Radio, acting as an accompaniment to the 3 episode podcast series Lesbian Films Emily Likes, which can be listened to via the MPR global playlist. This New Year special looks at what Emily was watching (a lot of Channel 4 when it was still good) and listening to between 2006-08 (pre the economic recession) in relation to what art college was like then, whilst regaling some new writing and old anecdotes, and considers lockdown as a space to consume to the point of saturation various media when you feel like you've completed Netflix, playing, as usual, both jaunty and tragic narrative based country and folk songs with a bit of punk-pop thrown in. Essentially, expect quite an erratic medley in sharp contrast to a very static lockdown body.
