Isle of Sound is the first artwork created for the new Creative Isle Community Rail Partnership, a new initiative by Turner Contemporary in collaboration with Thanet District Council and support from Southeastern. The CICRP aims to work with local communities and artists, to engage with their local stations and the rail network through developing creative interventions at the stations. The partnership cover’s the line and all seven stations on the route in Thanet – Birchington-on-Sea, Westgate-on-Sea, Margate, Broadstairs, Dumpton Park, Ramsgate, and Minster.  

Isle of Sound is a series of seven soundscapes by Emily Peasgood. It celebrates sonic diversity in different parts of Thanet, with a unique piece for each of the 7 Thanet train stations featuring sounds that can be heard in each.  Each soundscape has been composed using field recordings and sounds recorded and submitted by community groups local to each of the stations, with over 100 people from across the Isle attending online workshops with Emily to develop and record sounds to contribute to the project. When all seven soundscapes are heard simultaneously, a composition is formed that can be heard below.

Isle of Sound

When I Grow Up I Want To Be A Ship is a sound installation created for God's House Tower in Southampton. It takes the form of a song, played through speakers in the gallery space, exploring Southampton’s complex relationship to the sea. Spanning a period of over 400 years, the song’s lyrical content explores the city’s every-changing coastline from the 1600s to the present day and into the future. Informed and inspired by local histories and local people, the song invited visitors to immerse themselves in the story of the Solent.

Emily Peasgood (born 1981 in Grimsby, Lincolnshire) is an Ivor Novello Composer’s Award winning composer, sound artist and visual artist. She creates research-led and site specific interactive artworks for galleries and outdoor public spaces, ranging from large-scale community events to intimate sound installations. Her work aims to transform how we perceive our environment by creating invitations to connect with people and places that are forgotten, overlooked, or surrounded by histories that can be remembered and celebrated through sound and music. Peasgood is best known for her work in outdoor public locations with specific communities of people, often utilising innovative technology and design to serve her concept and enhance visitor interaction. Her work has been described as magical  (The Times), evocative (The Telegraph), and memorable (A-N). Peasgood’s practice is underpinned by an aesthetic belief in creating artworks that enrich people’s lives through embodying the values of accessible, inclusion and engagement. She recently completed her PhD ‘Creating accessible, inclusive and engaging artwork through experimental processes in the community’ (Canterbury Christ Church University) and holds a PGCAP Post Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice (research and lecturing).
