This song is about what it's like to love and be loved so deeply, flaws and all (on both sides), and learning how to really trust and let someone else in. As you’ll hear, the song is mainly in English, but I wrote several verses in Portuguese, as think other languages help me express things more fully, as you can’t always find the right words or expressions in one language.

The talented Pablo Dominguez mixed/mastered Nostalgia, and wrote and recorded some excellent percussion lines for it. Another talented local friend, Stephen Donoghue, wrote and recorded cello, which I think really takes the track to another level. Can’t wait to hear what everyone thinks!

Backstory:
I heard Mark Villholm, a very talented Sheffield based guitarist and Producer, playing a gig (in pre covid times) and in between sets he was jamming on stage, I loved the riff he was playing and could immediately hear a melody in my head. I recorded it on my phone, and then asked him if I could write a song on top of his guitar part. Mark agreed and so here we are :) I originally just posted the track (entitled Tudo Muda [Everything Changes] on my YouTube, but I decided to revisit it this year, so I’ve changed a few of the Portuguese lyrics added harmonies and rerecorded the vocals to make it even stronger than before.

In general, I always try and anchor my songs in my lived experience, so to a particular time, person or place (often all three!). I think this can help my songs portray more emotion, and connect more with listeners.

Nostalgia

How often do you feel an instant connection with someone? I wrote my new single Ontem (released TODAY woop!) about that moment when you meet someone whilst dancing and have such an incredible chemistry with them that you can’t get them out of your head. I have danced for most of my life, and have been doing Latin (largely partner) dances for over 10 years, however, I rarely feel a strong chemistry with someone, so when it does happen, it’s all the more memorable. 

Ontem is my second Música Popular Brasileira (MPB) song. MPB is a trend in post-bossa nova urban popular music in Brazil that revisits typical Brazilian styles such as samba, samba-canção and baião and other Brazilian regional music, combining them with foreign influences, such as jazz and rock. I wrote this song whilst living in Salvador, Brazil. 


“Ontem” means yesterday (check out the full music video - link in my bio - for the full translation), & I felt the lyrics captured my experience & feelings more fully in Portuguese than in English. For me, music has such a powerful ability to express & extract emotions I couldn't quite (just) put into words. Sometimes you need melodies as well.

I first performed the original unplugged version (just vocals & ukulele) of Ontem live in Brazil in 2019 (search for "Ontem live - Emma Savile"). This is the reworked, more upbeat Brazilian Popular Music MPB arrangement (with guitar, bass, keys, & percussion). The instrumental arrangement was recorded & produced in Salvador by two of my insanely talented Brazilian friends @undersoncunha & @pedrofonseca.77 

It was important to me to work with Brazilians, as I wrote the song in Salvador and wanted the music to reflect a lot of the inner processing I did whilst living in the stunning Bahia, as well as honouring local talent. I'd highly recommend Anderson and Pedro, hugely gifted musicians and producers.

I'm delighted to announce my latest single, Love Wasn't Enough, is now available to stream/purchase! I wrote this song shortly after breaking up with my ex. It was a difficult break up even though it was for the right reasons, as I couldn't see us having a future. As often happens, music allowed me express what words alone could not. My guitar part has been greatly reworked/improved by the insanely talented Spanish musician/producer Pablo Dominguez (who also added the bass & percussion), & the cello line by my equally talented local friend Stephen Donoghue gave it a great depth of feeling (in my humble opinion!). Love Wasn't Enough

I wrote Through The Storm for anyone who’s had covid/tough time over the past 18 months, and is particularly dedicated to those with Long Covid. I know personally what a difficult journey that can be. The line “wish I could hold you through the storm you’ve had to weather” is in reflection of people who couldn’t physically be with their loved ones whilst they were suffering. Through The Storm

This song was written in memory of my much beloved grandma. This is a really personal song for me, so I hope you connect with it. Even though my grandma passed away long before covid entered our lives, I’ve been thinking about her a lot during the pandemic. It’s been such a tough 18 months for so many, so big hugs to anyone who has lost a loved one. ​

My grandma taught me to play the piano and fostered my love of good food, singing/music, volunteering/giving back, travel/exploring and appreciating different cultures. She inspired me to be a better person every day. I wanted to write a song in memory of her, in reflection of how she enriched the lives of so many.

I wrote this song to set the tone for how I want 2022 to be. If covid has taught us anything, it's the life is short, & to therefore be appreciated. This is the hiphop anthem I play to myself if I need a bit of motivation to Be The Change that I want to see in the world. I wrote this trap-soul fusion track after realising how many of my male friends were struggling in silence about their mental health, especially since the pandemic. 

'Ghosts' is about battling those inner demons and the process of slowly letting the "light in". I hope it reduces the stigma around mental health, particularly for men, and moves your' head, heart & feet.

FreeFalling is about gradually letting your barriers down, learning to trust on a deeper level, falling in love & really letting that person in. Something which I think is harder than ever in an increasingly materialistic society which is always pushing us to get a “newer, faster, shinier etc.”, & not be content with what we have, or try & work at something/fix it.

The concept/message is summed up in the second verse:

I wanted Still Standing to be a powerful anthem for all the times I want to give up & need a bit of extra motivation. (Appropriately, I was editing the vocals, guitar & bass/overseeing the mix & master whilst recovering from flu, I could barely get out of bed 🙈 - so this track was needed!). This song is about overcoming all of the isms - racism, sexism, abelism, ageism etc. And it's especially close to my heart. With everything happening in the world, so much division, hurt & ‘othering’ - I wanted to create something that reminds us that we have more in common than we think, & that love will always be stronger than hate.

About the song:
(Together) We’re Stronger is an upbeat pop-soul-R&B track centred around unity, resilience, & the power of shared humanity. I Miss You (Schuyler Fisk) - Calum Carlyle & Emma Saville

Hope everyone is having a great week so far and keeping warm. My new single SAUDADE has just been released! Thanks so much for your support, means a lot 🥰xx

I wrote this song whilst living in Salvador. It's about the journey of when I decided to get over my first love, despite our intense connection. Saudade means longing, loss, desire etc, & I felt captures my experience & feelings more fully in Portuguese than in English. Sometimes love sadly just doesn't work out, even if you both want it to. Factors like geographical distance, family responsibilities, & being at different points in your lives all play a part.

I released the original unplugged version (just vocals & ukulele on the 18th January 2021). This is the reworked, more upbeat Brazilian Popular Music MPB arrangement (with guitar, bass, keys, percussion & flute). The instrumental arrangement was recorded & produced in Salvador by two incredibly talented Brazilian friends @undersoncunha & @pedrofonseca.77 It was important to me to work with Brazilians on this, as I wanted the music to reflect a lot of the inner processing I did whilst living in the stunning Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, as well as honouring local talent. I'd highly recommend Anderson and Pedro, very gifted musicians and producers.

Emma Saville is an evocative, soulful British singer/songwriter based in Sheffield, UK. With her Greek / Italian roots, Emma’s sultry music is a rich blend of soul, jazz, folk, pop & chillout, with Latin influences. Between 2012 & 2016, Emma was one of the lead singers of Orquesta Estelar, one of the hottest live Latin bands in London, UK. 

Emma is currently releasing her first solo album throughout 2021. The first soul/big band jazz single, ‘Out The Door’, debut record with CCBeats of BAFA Productions, was released on December 8th 2020.

‘Saudade Unplugged’ was released on January 18th 2021, & ‘Saudade’ (a more upbeat Música Popular Brasileira, or MPB, version) was released on January 26th 2021. ‘Nostalgia’ was released on May 4th, & ‘Ontem’(also MPB) was released on May 25th 2021. ‘Love Wasn’t Enough’, Through The Storm’, ‘Not Forgetting’ & ‘What If’ have also subsequently been released & have likewise received positive international acclaim.
