After five years of planning, writing, and refining their sound, London-based production duo Kolectiv are set to release their long-awaited debut drum & bass album, Circadian Rhythms.

The project began in the aftermath of the pandemic, when the pair started setting aside tracks that captured the spirit of a night out at a drum & bass event. Their vision was clear: to create an album that reflects the variety, energy, and progression of a rave – from the first beats that pull you into the closing sounds that carry you home.

“Going out to drum & bass nights, you’d hear so many different flavours across six or seven hours. We wanted the album to follow that same arc – like a circadian rhythm, a natural flow of time, but in this case the cycle of a rave,” Kolectiv explain.

To achieve this, the duo placed a strong emphasis on originality and sound design. Most of the album was built from scratch using their own recorded samples, crafted through sessions with keys, drums, and guitars, and only dipping into external sources when absolutely necessary. Vocal collaborations from PAV4N, Hijak MC, Illmatika and Kerry Donnelly add unique flavour to the project, while carefully placed interludes tie the project together as a complete listening experience.

“This isn’t just a collection of tracks. We wanted it to be a journey – a cradle-to-grave kind of experience – with highs, lows, and moments to breathe.”

The title Circadian Rhythms captures that intention perfectly: an audio diary of a night spent immersed in drum & bass culture, told through Kolectiv’s trademark blend of technical precision and emotional depth.

The project also coincided with a complete studio overhaul, giving Kolectiv a fresh environment to finalize and mix down the record with a renewed sense of clarity and focus.

With Circadian Rhythms, Kolectiv deliver more than an album – they present a story, an atmosphere, and a tribute to the music and culture that shaped them.

Thinkin through beats

Something about the name of this EP from Kontakt leads you to believe that it's nothing short of mind bending music and if you’re on the same wavelength as us, then you’re probably right in your assumption. A brand new sound from the Serial Killaz label that’s full of ‘Drips, Trips and Slips’.

The lead track comes in the form of ‘Disassemble’. A tune so focussed on pitch bends and grotty pads that playing it repeatedly for too long will no doubt turn the rest of your street into one foot skanking zombies. ‘Planet 9’ is surprisingly more upbeat and somewhat jolly with it’s bright snares and kicks that probably symbolise the best part of your sonic trip. A perfect way to avoid any kind of comedown or morning after vibes. Someone pass the saxophone!

If you’re a DJ, you already know that the graveyard shift can either be bloody amazing or a pain in the arse. Thankfully, on this occasion Kontakt provided enough vibes and atmosphere to keep whatever party you’re at going. It’s also been said that dropping ‘Graveyard Shift’ on your next livestream can boost the number of shares by 50%. ‘Entropy’ is a strange beast, combining elements of other tracks from the EP and making one hell of a mash up. Probably best combined with some hellish behaviour and a couple of Red Stripes.

Licking off the EP, Kontak joins forces with Vital Elements for ‘Witness This’. A fine Serial Killaz staple that pays homage to the sound of the label and reminds fans why they came here in the first place. Something new combined with something old and boom.... It’s a wrap.
