You're super, and delightful, and a prime paragon of performing a proper job of personhood (and partying ;) - caring, courageous, authentic and awesome.

Loads of laughs and life-affirming chats and letting loose and love, and I know I'm labouring the alliteration here so let's...move on!

I know I committed quite the faux-party in spending as long as I did in the midst of proceedings on chronically neglected DAW^ housekeeping in order to be able to play, but I trust the result was / is worth it ;]

Heaps of tunes I haven't played in ages and / or haven't played at all (in fact, can't even figure out where they came from! :o) with periodic favourites thrown in to keep things on the rails... There’s a distinct (not quite the right word ;)...wonkiness (! :) at play throughout this set, as it swoops and lurches from giddy heights to vacant lulls, swingin’ back to dancefloor grooves then veering off ⁼ again...

...which seems a pretty accurate reflection of the general state-of-play at that stage in proceedings! Not that I can actually, exactly, remember; we’re talking pre-pandemic after all, may as well have been the Paleolithic Era... ;] Ah, the good ol’ days... ;D

You've got to hand it to the Silo crew: they consistently put on amazing parties, bringing only top quality music, atmosphere, and energy to the whole affair. It was nothing short of an absolute pleasure to play the warm-up set - indoors, on the big rig! - for their Polar Inertia gig. And Polar Inertia: wow. I mean, really wow. In fact, wows all 'round, to Luc, and to Dave Mummery and Qualé, who, bookending Polar Inertia, both surpassed themselves - no mean feat. Seriously, any more fat, driving, juicy techno and I would have burst! :O

Thanks ever so much to Richie, Dave, Andrew and co. for making it all happen (magic!), and to all who came for making it such a truly awesome night. To those who made a point of letting me know what they felt about my set, many thanks as well; your encouragement means a great deal to me, just startin' out with club gigs as I am. And, for those who were sorry to have missed it and/or all interested parties, I did record my set; here 'tis, hope you enjoy it as much as I did playing! :)

I'd been wanting to see if I could, coherently and… meaningfully (without undue manner…ism…s ;] ), mix a group of tracks from my collection that range pretty widely in tempo (for techno, or for how I play techno at least :) and intensity (and feel, and flavour) yet all share in some measure (however small, or subtle) a quality that…

…I (even I! ;) find hard to articulate. Like a wide clear night sky in the country (or desert, I imagine; I've not - yet - been :), deep black and riotous with stars, a bit dizzying and delicately dazzling, too vast to really comprehend and so instilling just the right (read: manageable :) amount of awe... is the best I can do. (In my collection, I tag these tracks 'cosmic', with various qualifiers, and for want of a less… used-and-oft-abused-yet-actually-literally-useful term: cosmic, as in, of the cosmos… ;D)

Wow, I've talked it up rather a lot! Anyway... Like all good psycho-cosmo-nautical trips (! ;), okay, journeys, this one has its moment(um)s and mean(der)ings… may range far, but… isn't long! Come along :)

machine on fnoob techno radio - virtual awecosm (dj mix) - 14 june 2024

I played my first club gig for Machine a few weeks back, when the international that they and Silo had booked for their first joint party cancelled his trip due to illness a week out from the event. In his stead, they invited me to play :O I know, huh?!

Now, for all (and by 'all' I mean 'all six') of my previous DJ gigs, I'd spent at least a few weeks working up a set; 18 months of DJing at friends' parties and I hadn't yet gained enough confidence in my ability to deliver an impromptu performance - despite holding a Bachelor Degree in Music Performance majoring in Improvisation (hahaha!). Needless to say, five days notice was a tad less than ideal, for me. 

But what the hell; you don't get far by not trying, and I felt honoured to have been asked to play; so play I did, the first set of the night rather than a 'peak time' slot (my confidence still has its limits ;). It went over really, really well; the room filled up, people danced, and I had so much fun that I forgot all about being nervous. What I also forgot, of course, was to hit the record button at the outset...

But, having only had a day-and-a-bit spare to prepare, I wasn't nearly done having fun working with the tunes I'd chucked together for the occasion. So, at the next available opportunity, I set up in the studio at home and, well, played 'em again. While this (obviously?) isn't the same set as on the night, it is the same (awesome) tracks, in the same order (even) - excepting the last four, which I added this time 'round, and one other track that snuck in to the midst. Altogether, it's a bit of a ripper, if I do say so m'self! Hope you enjoy :D xo

What AMAZING FUN! 

As the largest hausparty we'd had for months AND a celebration of the inimitable JonFun's milestone birthday, it was never going to be anything less (we don't do things by halves ;). Not even the neighbours complaining about the 'noise' (which wasn't very sporting of them, given the Funs have parties at their house biennially, on average, AND JonFun only gets one 40th in his entire life) could dent our merriment; we just moved the whole PA, and the smoke machine, into the 3x4 metre room facing onto the backyard in which the mixing desk was already installed, shut the window, and carried on. And carried on some more...

There was a glove-/finger-puppet show. And a molecular-gastronomical cake. AND awesome beats - for which, hearty thanks to Shaun, Simon, oldm8 and Toby, being those who played while I was there (as did I, too :), and to all others who played (after I left for the footy^), for carrying on. While we're at it, thanks also to all the marvellous folk who came, for being totally ACE, and, most of all, to the Funs: for being, and for having us - I (for one) do so love being had by the two of you ;P You guys are FUkN AMAZING!!!

I chucked a pretty random and eclectic (as befits the birthday boy ;) 'bag' together for this party - all still techno, o' course (well, the first track is actually minimal (techno), to be exact ;P). Overall, it's a tad more (shall we say) 'hysterical' than what I'd generally play at a club (if you can generalise from four club gigs ;) but this was a house party; no reason not to let rip! (Oh yeah, right: the neighbours...) Some things rolled out rather well, others didn't quite come off; all-in-all it's got a bit of go about it, so I thought I'd share, for all who were there and any who weren't and everyone in between. Enjoy :D

^ I wouldn't usually leave a great party before it was well and truly DONE. But this was the Tiges' last home game of the season at 'our' home ground, where I get to sit in 'my' seat; I couldn't not go. (Maybe I'm turning into a 'bit of a' die-hard..?) Thankfully, 'we' won - smashed 'em, by 83 points! - so, rather than miss more AMAZING FUN for nought, I got to be so glad I went - win WIN!

It’s remarkable, really, the healing power of country and community...

escape from melburn again reloaded, part ii: re-turn to melburn (director's redux) - 02 january 2016

I know I describe pretty much every party we throw as ‘the best one yet’ but only because it keeps being true (and surely we'd be doing something wrong if we weren't getting better at it each time ;). Naomi and Anastasia's 40th was no exception; in fact, it may end up taking out this year's trophy (if such existed). The space looked absolutely amazing, the sound inside was AWESOME - as were the TUNES that made up that sound - and the provision of sustenance, good cheer and interactive entertainments was unstinting; hearty thanks to all those responsible for all of the aforementioned (too many to name here). Indeed, everyone who was there helped make it the outrageously good party it was, so to all who came: goodonyas! (And to those who couldn’t make it: hate-to-say-it-but-yas-missed-a-doozy!)

I went on at half-three in the a.m. between Qualé and Matty Brennan - my first DJ outing in front of a crowd of more than a dozen since, well, last year. I obviously needed the time out, but playing again proved to be WAY MORE FUN than not, when it came down to it (oddly enough ;P). The end result was/is rather...unfettered let’s say (without saying that’s a bad thing) and the generous feedback I received at the time was positive, so here ’tis - hope you enjoy :D

Unearthed this the other day, from Machine's Boxing Day party in 2015 (and what a great party it was :D). Evidently I was going through a Prologue phase at the time, though there's not much in their catalogue that isn't timeless. Throw in some Ostgut Ton and Stroboscopic Artefacts, some quality productions from Machine mates Lateral and Knobs, and a couple of stylistic cuckoos, and the result holds up well enough I think for an airing...

[original notes] My second gig at Machine was also my first using my new 'rig' in public. (Finally, some knobs and faders to play with!!!) Given I was opening in the courtyard, I had intended to keep things at the deep, dubby, downtempo end of the spectrum but - per usual for me, apparently - that's certainly not where we ended up! Not to worry; punters seemed to enjoy the ride and I definitely had a good time, hehe. In fact, the end result is oddly reminiscent of me whenever each festy season rolls around: a bit all over the shop but rollin' with the proverbials ;P So, while it takes some strange turns (if not hairpin bends) here 'n' there, the potholes are relatively few; just watch out for those pumpin' fists! Hope you enjoy the trip :D

Closing out a quality day party at My Aeon, playin’ after Artefakt, who served us up some ‘proper’ live techno - fat, fresh, fully engaged and quite frankly a-may-ZING! (Tough act to follow is putting it mildly... ;) 

Stellar beats were delivered by all concerned (technical glitches aside) - onya Lance Harrison, Dave Stuart, Trinity and (stalwart emergency substitute) Dave Mummery. 

And to the Silo and Nightime Drama crews for their sterling efforts in putting on the whole shebang - full respect; and the venue staff for hosting - cheers. Not to mention all the friendly punters who came along - you guys rocked it :D

Now THAT was a Machine! 

It had a vibe right from the get-go, not wholly attributable to the buzz in the build up, though that was certainly one of the many factors which aligned... Lateral laid the perfect acoustic foundation, with trademark substance, depth and range, and from there it was a sustained  and superb manifestation of all that is great about this...medium? artform? culture? All of the above. The dancefloor environs looked truly amazing, thanks altogether to Grigory’s sublime visuals, which more than made up for the lack of a smoke machine (bet you didn’t even notice! ;), and sounded just as amazing; looks great, sounds great, probably safe to say it IS great. 

It was an absolute honour to host such utterly lovely, keen and talented titans of the techno trade as Moe (Drumcell) and David (Truncate); ’twas all too brief in the end (a month would probably not be long enough :) but oh so very good! I trust you both had at least as great a time as the distances you travelled to visit us, thanks SO much for coming and please, come again ;) 

I do believe I can safely speak for pretty much everyone in saying that a great time was, indeed, had by ALL. With such stellar support from punters, staff and crew alike, Machine steps up and delivers  once again (on this occasion right at the ‘pointy end’ of the season, too ;)

I played upstairs, after Simon Slieker, from 2am until they kicked us back downstairs. My aim was to provide a contrast to the main proceedings below whilst not straying too far from the LA boys’ rather exceptional musical sensibilities; hence the inclusion of a fair few of their own both individual and collective releases and/or remixes. Along with Drumcell and Truncate, other artists represented include Matasism, Kwartz, Sigha, Planetary Assault Systems and (Melbourne’s own) Enclave; labels include EarToGround Records, Droid Records, CLR, Ostgut Ton, Machine Label and Modularz. The end result is a bit of a rollercoaster ride, but a relatively cruisy and overwhelmingly fun one, I trust you’ll agree! Peace, love and abundant gratitude, hope you enjoy :)

Well, once again that was the BEST New Year’s party EVER I’ve had the pleasure and priviledge of attending, enjoying, performing at, staggering around and otherwise being ALL OVER (like a beautiful rash ;)

The entire dancefloor arena, from DJ booth to far costumery wall and every level, light and slice of night-and-day sky in between, was EPIC.^ Such a treat to pump out tunes in such a setting, and with such a deluxe SOUNDSYSTEM, not to mention all for the enjoyment of such STELLAR CREW. From the calibre of all performances, I’m fairly certain I wasn’t alone among those playing in having an extremely good time, well, playing :D

Now, I could go on at length (and indeed have, on the Face%#&k event page) about the many wonderful individuals of every creative/anarchic stripe who each and all made this event the totally ‘hectic’ fun it was ;P But, here, special mention must go to Ishtar (the ‘other’ Simon) and Dobbin (aka Boffin), whose tireless efforts kept that awesome rig running at premium fatness for the duration, whilst they also ensured that we DJ/artists had everything we could wish for (except, periodically, a clear view of pretty much anything through the smoke machine’s prodigious output haha ;) (I believe ‘the’ Simon being the culprit there, in any case... :] ) including but not limited to: 

> discount (if contractual) artist prices for the day/night/day’s recordings; 
> basic training in underground guerilla party mayhem; 
> a non-stop masterclass in wit; 
> a complete(ly hilarious) digest of the past year’s current affairs; 
> more laughs than you could poke a jack at; 
> and (I suspect) some covert (but ultimately beneficial) neuro-linguistic re-programming.

So: thanks, mis capitanes (sorry, not to get you confused with the Colac Cartel... ;) -  you guys totally (if not literally) RULE *\o/*

Live from The Late-Nite Tigers Renegade Bangin’ Chill Club, which overtook the cinema space at Wolfgang’s from late New Year’s Day night until dawn the following day (and even for a good forty-minutes-to-an-hour after everyone, myself included, had drifted off elsewhere !!! ;o)

No pre-planning (beyond hurling a heap o’ random tracks into a playlist), nor previewing (didn’t have the means); just off-the-cuff, on-the-fly, in-the-moment, by-ear mixing. Naturally, there are some kinks and wobbles, but I was pretty kinky / wobbly m’self by then! (Nor was I alone... ;)

Thanks (again) to Ishtar and Boffin for helpin’ me set up, and to all the stayers for giving me an excuse to play some more choons; although I couldn’t help m’self ramping it up a tad in places (when the brief - such as there was - was to ‘wind down’), y’all hung in there - you guys rock. T’was a great vibe in that cosy li’l space, which was brought right back to me upon listening to the recording, so here ’tis - sit back and chill - haha! xo

This was one of the best parties I’ve had the pleasure of attending and honour of playing at for quite a while - since Dharma & Simon’s last production, in fact! Top notch. Superlative. Extraordinary. 

I feel so blessed to be able to play a part in creating such quality forums by which we can all celebrate life, love, each other - and TECHNO - in such a meaningful, substantial and progressive - not to mention FUN - way.

Well, we couldn’t very well send Clare off on her overseas sojourn in anything other than sensational style! The frocks! The flowing locks! The facepaint, and the fascinators, and all the fun folk (and the foto ops ;) and - o’ course - the FAT BEATS!!! As fat and fun as it absolutely was is at least how much we’re gonna miss you - DO miss you, already!

Sorry it’s taken me so long to get this set posted - though it has meant I’ve had the pleasure of reliving the night’s awesomeness some six weeks after the event, by listening through the set and being reminded of great times with even better mates, of whom you, lovely Clare, are absolutely one - bless :) xo

Somehow I resisted the urge to buy new/more music for this party; instead, I dug right back through my collection, extracting choice choons, from various sources, that hadn’t had an outing in a while (or had, depending ;). clare's '80s farewell prom night warehouseparty, melbourne (dj set) - 09 june 2018

’Twas an honour and a pleasure to kick start MTC’s return to the club roster after some three-and-a-half months’ hiatus; it may have been a while between beats for the crew, but they more than made up for that with a night absolutely rammed with talent. Fortunately, the venue’s suggestion to Matt et al of booking a deep house DJ first up to effect the transition from the regular Friday night commercial R’n’B post-work proceedings beforehand met with staunch refusal (’T’ for ‘techno’, mate ;) and I was able, was, in fact, positively encouraged to leap right in - no point in fkn around, especially when the number of awesome DJs amped and waiting to each deploy their own techno arsenal went all the way up to eleven. I trust I fulfilled the brief (‘play techno’ being pretty much the size of it ;) - at the very least, I know there was not even the faintest remaining whiff of R’n’B* in that room by the time I was done ;D

Featuring FAT TUNES from antipodean talents Lateral, Enclave, Digital Primate (with Robin Kampschoer), Juan Tellez and Mot3k, along with international techno legends Flug, Planetary Assault Systems and Kangding Ray, and labels Android Musiq and Machine (home) and Klockworks and From 0-1 (away) to name a few - props to the creators and disseminators. Yikes! I didn’t see that particular hour-and-a-bit of music coming at all. I only got the call up the day before, after one of Hoi Polloi’s star talents Consoles was a late (forced) withdrawal (hammy soreness? ;). Having not touched my music in two months, and knowing I’d have a mere half an afternoon to get some tunes together, I freaked out for a good while before pulling my finger out (so to speak) and stepping up to the plate (to use a completely foreign metaphor ;). Perhaps it was precisely because I had so little time to think about it that, in the end, I had such a good time! Sure, there were a few wobbles, and my gain structure was all over the shop, but it was absolutely rockin’ great fun playin’ :D And the dancefloor, modest in dimensions as it might have been, was positively heaving throughout. I’m still a bit baffled, though; I could have sworn that, in the limited preparation I did do, I’d put together a bag of ‘light’ upbeat grooves - ha!

What a great li’l party! A matinée by techno standards ;) It was nice to kick off during daylight, for a change, and finish up modestly by midnight. Thanks so much to Dave and Leon for their initiative in getting System/:32 up and running, and for inviting me to play; ’twas an absolute honour. I highly recommend you keep an eye out for future System/:32 events - guaranteed to be great! *\o/* And thanks again/as always to Red Betty’s amazing crew, who have created such a warm, welcoming, down-to-earth, stylish space for our frolics; you guys are exemplary.

My flavour of the month at the mo’ is Wehbba, so this set features a few of his tracks, with other tunes by the likes of Joyhauser, Josh Wink, Reset Robot, Symmetrical Behaviour, and our very own Ranjit Nijjer and JXTPS; perhaps unusually for me, I raided some marquee labels for this one, including Soma Records, Octopus Records, Drumcode and Token. Not before time, here’s my first set from this year’s Staggeringly Beautiful: Carnivale Saturnalia at the staggeringly spectacular Wolfgang’s Palace in Nalangil, Victoria, playing at 3am in the main indoor/outdoor party atrium. (For the AH-MAY-ZING quadrophonic/surround sound, courtesy of Ishtar and Boffin as per - thanks, legends :D - well...you had to be there!) I was evidently in a mood to chuck simply everything at it, and even now look at the tracklist and marvel that I strung together so much material that ostensibly had no business being in the same room, let alone set. But, after all, it was New Year’s Eve; you can’t but leave it all out on the field. The end result is pretty rough and ready but still makes for a rollickin’ good ride - as long as you hang on for dear life, as I did, through some of the rougher corners, pockets of turbulence and occasional abrupt plummets in altitude... So, strap y’rselves in, folks: yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-ha!

fleur's 42nd b'day hausparty (dj set) - 21 april 2019

While so many things in the world at the mo’ seem to be trending downwards or backwards or completely fucked-upwards, Hoi Polloi’s parties are a shining and most welcome exception. If I was to say, again, “Best party ever!” you’d be forgiven for being sceptical - but they do keep getting better and better (as we all get better at it ;). Everything, from the turnout to the lineup and the décor and sound, and spirit and ethos and energy and all, was FAN-TA-STIC. Immeasurable thanks to all the proles who put it together and the rabble who roistered: you helped me turn a quite frankly dismal week completely around, leaving me positively throbbing with joy and gratitude.

Special props to AJ, who provided such immaculate, rich sound in the DJ booth that playing was an absolute and (almost) effortless joy. Unfortunately, my laptop succumbed to the sensationally steamy environment (at least, I suspect that’s what it was ;) and cut out entirely partway through, but recovery was fortunately swift and my momentum (miraculously) unimpeded. (I suppose I could have edited out the break, but haven’t - keepin’ it real ;) This one’s all for dancin’, trust you enjoy :D

It was anarchy and ichonomachy†; we came, we revelled, we razed those orthodox beliefs and outmoded institutions to the ground (which could be seen as a preventative in these incendiary times :’o). A blissful and brilliant reminder of the power and freedom in not just choosing your own adventure but building it from the ground up (which will become increasingly vital, I suspect) whilst sharing the whole endeavour with a whole lotta other marvellous, motivated, mahtava‡ and magical maniacs. 

I was in a right state when it came time to play; for no appreciable reason that I can adequately account for, I was forty-five minutes late in starting and, when I did get going, was sucked immediately into a musical wormhole that made moot my offer to cut my set short to make up lost time - apologies, fellow DJs ;P There are a couple of hiccups, but if that’s the worst of it, then things went rather brilliantly! Hope you enjoy, as you embark upon this future that is upon us - 2020, look out! :D xoxo

planetary panacea: techno for testing times (dj mix) - 25 april 2020

Well! I can say without a shadow of a doubt that that was the most fun I’ve had all year! And, against all odds, I’ve actually had a fair whack o’ fun in 2020 - amidst the despair and infuriation, the torpor and existential crises, naturally ;) Some people seem to think that fun is something only evil people have (or so I’ve heard ;D); bearing in mind that fun isn’t (necessarily ;) synonymous with frivolity, I think it’s the whole point. Okay, part of the whole, at least; I’d have to add also awe (astonishment, amazement), and love (passion, compassion) - and Technoir had an abundance of these, too. I can only wilt in admiration and gratitude at the tireless organisational efforts of all involved, ‘midst a rolling (when not roiling ;) maul of “unprecedented” and shifting parameters, to ultimately deliver a night that was so enriching, invigorating, and life-affirming that I am still aglow.

I opened proceedings in the “main room” downstairs, chock-full of smoke as it was; the excitement and good vibes were, if not actually visible, nonetheless palpable, and such a welcome contrast to the so-called “new-normal” in these (pre?-)apocalyptic times. I mean, if we lose sight of such capacity for connection and joy, then we truly are doomed. Massive thanks to all who came along, your support means so much. After so many (blur-)days, weeks, months of feeling utterly alienated from my “craft”, which intermittent attempts to record a mix or even feign interest in my music collection^ only served to amplify, I was slightly amazed and more than a little relieved to find that, once the initial twenty minutes of jitters, hiccups, and even, yes, mistakes had spent themselves, I was thoroughly into it, in it, swept away in that flow-space that transcends the sum of its parts…

I’ve been keenly following the Technoir lads since they launched on the scene, fresh-faced and bursting with enthusiasm,† sixteen-odd years ago - so it was an honour and genuine, unfettered pleasure to make my debut for their night at this, the first proper party many of us have had for the year! Techno lives!!! :D

technoir’s 16th annual christmas party @ colour, melbourne (opening dj set) - 25 december 2020

Way to make socialising great again! ;P Gone, the anonymity of large crowds; hello, being able to meet and/or greet everyone there. And all during civilised hours :o I did find it pretty weird, having to go outside to warm up after playing - so effective was the air-con! But my favourite moment was, maybe fifty minutes into my set, looking up and seeing everyone clearing away the tables and chairs so folk could dance. Awesome :D

I really enjoyed playing more “downtempo”, groovy techno than has been my norm of late so, when I (eventually ;D) made it home, I tacked an extra half hour of such tunes onto the recording from the gig, just for the utter fun of it; the result has summer Sunday afternoon written all over it, hope you enjoy :)

Helloo!

It's been a long time, and quiet at that from my end. Just having a fallow spell and/or mojo lull (depending on the day :), managing my mind and health (or not - ditto ;), musing and meandering and mimimalising... And while that's great / necessary (! :), I've found it a little unsettling to have this subside into dormancy... So it's fortunate that, in my inactivity, I've amassed a minor backlog of sets to upload - something fresh, however aged :D
