Emotional Response reaches 10 years plus with a first, a label compilation bringing together a series of artists who are friends, family, known, unknown, established or up and coming, who all represent an element, a sound, of the label that can be heard on the monthly NTS show, All Trades.

Presenting a spread of all the labels under the Emotional Recordings banner, the “All Trades” show provides a mixture, a showcase of a sound, from ambient to dub, soul to disco, beatdown to techno, all (un)mixed and merged in an unplanned, freeform style.  

Coming to the idea of bringing that to a compilation, the “Jack Of All, Master Of None” ethos is narrowed to a selection of admired producers today.  Twenty Four artists (over 2 Volumes) from numerous backgrounds, starting with the man who helped the label’s birth way back, helping creating the identiy, logo and early designs, in Paul Byrne aka Apiento.  As well as running the heralded Test Pressing website, he is now a respected producer of deep, melodic techno beats and acid embrace.  His throbbing acid collaboration with Tepper is the perfect start to set the tone of the album.  

Following, Edinburgh DJ, producer and overall (dry) oracle Gavin Sutherland offers the beautifully balearics of his Other Lands project, mixing the motorik with the Durutti, before Sweden’s trio Datasal weld a warm, live analogue mind worming jam.  

Side two sees Belfast’s rising stars Black Bones in full percussive, their love of post punk, dub and hip-hop apparent, a tipping point drama.  The first of three French digidub tracks is presented by Froid Dub, with just three releases capturing wide-ranging fans, Item By Item Dub encapsulates their riddim’n’sound.  To close, the wonderful Howes offers his new project Paperclip Minimiser, the trippy, ambient techno oeuvre that is a rightful ending.

The second half starts with another worthy collaboration, featuring Berlin residents of distinction, Cosmo Vitelli & Die Wilde Jagd joining forces with a suitably spoken word meets krautrock throb.  Tangents explored, welcoming Seattle’s Ann Denio and a quick step, spoken word joy.  Over a near 40-year career, this multi-instrumental composer of soundtracks for modern dance, film and theatre, as well as a songwriter and music improviser, is a delightful addition.  Then, a debut of sorts, Exotic Garden arrives, the new solo project of Peaking Lights’ Aaron Coyles, his self-proclaimed ‘Gothic Dub” instantly appeals, the dark psychedelics stretches the corners of All Trades sound, with more to follow.  

Closing the album are three ‘friends & family’ of the label, starting with the now prolific productions of Belgium’s soFa elsewhere, offering another collaboration, here vocalist Yamila uplights over sweet percussion and latin swing.  Next, acclaimed drummer and percussionist Valentina Magaletti shows why she has become a rightful cause célèbre with her extraordinary Radio77, celebrating her punk and industrial leanings with a rant through the airwaves, before the finale, the warm mediative embrace of Seahawks’ ambient statesman Jon Tye, closing with a beautiful, graceful farewell.

C3. Exotic Gardens - Soundwaves And Dark Caves

In.out.sider is a free multidisciplinary festival that promotes diversity through an eclectic and inclusive programming. With a focus on experimental music, the lineup also includes film screenings, visual arts, workshops, and a broader reflection on the inclusion of marginalized individuals in artistic programs.

Saeko Killy is a Berlin-based DJ and producer who started on the Tokyo scene before finding her place in the orbit of the Sameheads club. Her productions skillfully combine elements of dub, post-punk, and kraut with electronic rhythms.

After the success of the 2 Late 4 Love EP, Roy Of The Ravers returns to Emotional Response with a double LP with a deeper perspective, experimenting in ambient and drone textures, lucid techno travails and acid interludes. 

Recorded between 1997 and 2017, the album was pieced together over the last six months after Roy's archives were first feared lost and then found. Approached by the label to release a follow up with something more introspective and personal, it was discovered that a recent move to a new studio had led to over 20 years of music being misplaced after it was believed they were mistakenly dropped at a local charity store. However, deep in a box of what were thought to be patch cables were in fact the decades worth of hard drives and here presented, is a sample of those lost recordings.

The nature of the music is introspection, eschewing the acid beats and white noise for a personal encounter between man and machine. The orchestral opening of the title track gives way to the submarine beats, pulsing TB303 and gliding hats of Robinson College 10 to set the outlook to come. Even with the scattering A Dim And Distant Past waking lulled senses, the melodies and feel all lead to a pause and reflect rather than jump and shout. 

This is continued with the haunting drives of Bounce Erec and Oriental X0X-Press; the twisted, warped jams of The Weber Traum Boat Pt.3, Ichi and Roland Corp Labs 05; and the beautiful, heartfelt odes in Sade Lost Theme, The Clock House Pt.2 and closer, Nemesis '01. The album's melodic nature hums and shines as CS (6x8) appears as much a centre piece as a alternative consideration to the acid tinged, club bangs of Roy's releases to date. 

A surprise package maybe, but in the rolling, word of mouth phenomena that was Emotinium II, all this and more was sensed and so White Line Sunrise II, spreading across 12 songs of contrasting moods, is a further affirmation that there is something good and worthy of exploration

The psy, the rave, the sounds, the species, the food of the gods. Alpha Juno, Cyclon 303, mutable instruments and ideas collated, N4's modern mysticism to harness the Earth as a being of sound. This occult features an anarchism, offering us a collective immortality, allowing us, showing us, how to be more humane. 

Across eight tracks, our DJ weaves a journey to the inner and outer digi sphere, a two-year search, in to steppas, out of dub, evoking legitimate synthesis and sensibility. Look beyond Zamonia. The lost Chord. An alien dreamtime. Tales of Z.
