Empathy Test are back with double A-Side ‘Demons / Seeing Stars’, the first taste of the forthcoming debut album. Since releasing their stunning debut EP, ‘Losing Touch’, the enigmatic duo have impressed with their brooding cinematic electro pop sound; winning both critical acclaim and a legion of dedicated fans worldwide. Their music has seen radio support with KCRW, BBC Introducing and XFM and features with MTV, Clash Music, Earmilk and PopMatters amongst others. Isaac Howlett and Adam Relf formed Empathy Test after discovering a mutual love of eighties sci-fi soundtracks, nineties guitar bands and underground dance music. With echoes of CHVRCHES and Purity Ring, their sound has been described as Future Pop, Dark Wave and numerous other variations along similar themes.

The name Empathy Test is taken from the science fiction film Blade Runner. The duo’s artwork is also sci-fi inspired and follows similar themes to the movie, focusing on the basis of consciousness and the relationship between humans and technology. New track ‘Demons’ deals with the human nature of jealousy and how it can destroy a relationship. It explores how some people unconsciously cultivate jealousy in a partner in order to control them. In this all-consuming infatuation, nothing else matters - “and now she wakes up, every day and she invites, all of my demons to play.” It’s a subject that captures the duo’s strength and goes straight for the jugular.

Empathy Test are renowned for captivating their audiences with their branded mix of analogue synth sounds, uplifting melodies and catchy choruses. Live shows take audiences through driving creative rhythms and eighties pop beats, and new single ‘Demons’ is a live favourite amongst fans. While on tour last year, Empathy Test performed at Wave-Gotik- Treffen Festival in Germany, Urban Forest Festival in the UK and headlined Riba Rocks Festival in Spain. They have shared stages with artists such as Bombay Bicycle Club and The Japanese House. Empathy Test are embarking on another European tour that culminates with a show at London’s The Garage in October 2016. Empathy Test's 'Monsters' follows the "shimmering synths and glacial electronics" (Clash) of 'Holy Rivers' and the "dark, anthemic electro-pop" (Fresh on the Net) of 'Empty Handed' as the final single to be released from the forthcoming third album of the same name (May 2020). Far from being 'business as usual', 'Monsters' presents enough of a departure for the London-based Synth Pop band, renowned across Europe and beyond, for their "soft synth" sound, to raise a few eyebrows amongst the loyal fanbase the band has been quietly building since 2014.

'Monsters' incorporates the live acoustic beats of drummer Christina Lopez for the first time, along with an epic synthesised hook dreamt up by new keyboard player Oliver Marson. Channeling the incessant driving energy and 'coming home at 6am' paranoia of Placebo's 'Pure Morning', Empathy Test's 'Monsters' is like nothing the band has done before. Frontman Isaac Howlett's androgynous vocal sits lower in the mix than on previous offerings, helping to give 'Monsters' a weight and energy like never before. Non-performing founder member Adam Relf's production has also reached new heights of excellence, his subtle flourishes helping to raise the euphoria to fever pitch.

While the self-releasing, self-managed Empathy Test has remained criminally overlooked by the UK music scene despite appearing in shows on MTV and Netflix, radio play from Amazing Radio, Radio X and BBC Introducing, as well as press coverage from Clash, Line of Best Fit and many more, 'Monsters' may just have the power to propel the band into the limelight. French Synth-punk band Hystérie presents their ﬁrst EP on Area Z after two releases on Parisian label ‘Le Turc Mécanique’. The 3 members of the band oﬀer an engaging and personal material, whether in the lyrics or in their musical composition. Previously described as ‘Cold-Industrial’ they continue to deliver and develop their unique sound, reinforced by the lyrics sang in French.  The lyrics have a strong take on freedom and social liberties, addressing the current social issues in France and more generally happening worldwide such as police abuses and the loss of democratic rights. In this present work the band members personally engage themselves through a reﬂection about loss; whether it’s about dogma, illusions, hopes or reference points. It is about loss, in all its meanings and how to keep going from then. 

The track “Chaos” says it all. During the chorus, the sentence “Le Chaos règne”, meaning “Chaos rules” is repeated over and over again. The rattling guitar lines express this overwhelming chaos which seems to be all there is left. “Le Temps est venu, de faire ton Deuil”, which means “Now your time has come to mourn” is the last sentence sang in the track that wraps up the EP. It leaves the listener a lot to reflect upon. Despite the heavy and dark input that this song deals with, the final impression is uplifting and strength giving!
