Greyscale’s Mood Series welcomes Rothchord from Japan for its 124th release, Night Sinking, a 5-track journey into deep, hypnotic soundscapes. Rothchord's intricate production focuses on the effects of sound on the mind and emotions, all while maintaining a delicate balance in each composition.
'Convection of Consciousness' opens with a mid-tempo groove, slowly building anticipation as its alternating chords weave an addictive, hypnotic pattern. The clean production enhances the track’s captivating flow. 'Perspective' takes a dub techno approach, incorporating elements of house music. Its stabbing chords are perfectly paired with shimmering aquatic effects, making it one of the catchiest tracks on the release. The title track, 'Night Sinking,' dives deeper, offering a more spacious and minimal arrangement. Its crisp production creates an abyss-like atmosphere, with just the right amount of echo on the chords, exemplifying the "less is more" philosophy. 'Memory' showcases the heaviest bassline, deeply rooted in dub. The track’s echoing effects intensify towards the end, leaving a lasting impression, as though testing the listener’s memory. Last year in September I released the album ‘Quiet Rooms’ on the British label Whitelabrecs. The tracks on this album were a kind of self-healing process to refocus on home life after a long absence caused by working far away. At that time I was making a lot of improvised music and recording many ideas and sketches. After selecting the tracks for ‘Quiet Rooms’, some ideas, feelings, blurred images and unfinished tracks remained, which later became a solid base for ‘All Our Yesterdays’. Over the course of 2024, more recordings were made and - voilà - a new album was born.

'All Our Yesterdays' is probably a bit more introspective, exploring the spaces between the notes in a much deeper and broader way. So each track is quite transparent in atmosphere and sound, with piano notes, electronic textures and strange sounds drifting in and out. As always, all was recorded mainly at night in dim lighting to focus on what's important to me and my music. ‘All Our Yesterdays’ could be seen as a metaphor for missed moments on the one hand and great moments with the people you love on the other. Deep contemplation with a sense of serenity and balanced stillness - some things don't change...

The cover picture was taken in autumn at a nearby lake, when everything was already prepared and waiting for winter.

Empty Space is an artistic platform based in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland. We explore the interactions of physical media, their characteristic formal languages, and their modes of functionality. To achieve this, we focus on projects that experiment with various art forms, aesthetics, and crafts. Our goal is to create works of art that challenge conventional modes of production and reception.

To bring each project to life, we collaborate with different artists, blending their distinctive approaches and methods into something new. Depending on the medium, many of our productions are conceived as one-of-a-kind pieces or one-time performances.
