Sleeping under ocean waves, my eyes open to gentle ripples of light from waters above. Time moves slow as if it were just starting to set itself in motion again. Surreal bliss fills me as I float endlessly towards the surface.

Vietnamixtape is a sonic montage inspired by sounds I captured throughout my travels in Vietnam, 2018. It contains five chapters that use aural snapshots of my journey as central elements to each song.

MZQTO: Jungle ambience of Cat Tien. The lead stringed instrument is a recording of music I heard coming from a resident's house - unsure as to whether it was being played live or listened to over a stereo... turned it into a dubby beat.


PAGODA: Chimes of Truc Lam Monastery mixed with the breeze and bird song that sounds throughout the mountains there. 

ANZO: I met Anzo at Gaia Hostel in Dalat; here he's performing slam poetry over my guitar playing. I have no idea what he's saying but I kind of like that. You can also hear the iconic bus sounds of Vietnam in some Hanoi street ambience. 

NHA NHAC: Translating as 'elegent music', nha nhac is the traditional court music of Vietnam, here played by the court band in Imperial City, Hue. I converted into MIDI and had it reimagined by some synth bells.

NEW MOON: This last song centres around a live performance on a native Vietnamese instrument, the dan bau. At first I thought it would be cool to give it a Hendrix flavor, but then found that got pretty annoying pretty quick so I added a shit tonne of reverb and it became another ambient track. It closes with fireworks ringing out over the lake in Dalat during TET celebrations (lunar new year).
