Portland percussionist and composer Mark Musselman recorded this album using an array of orchestral percussion and played all instruments himself. Empyrean Chimes features tubular bells, glockenspiel, aluphone, crotales, vibraphone, and tympani, combined with grand piano, jazz/breakbeat drumming, synths, guitar, and bass. The result is an experimental fusion of jazz, contemporary classical, and post-rock. The music is at once cerebral and kinetic.
