Scott Radetski served in the United States Navy for over 27 years as a nuclear machinist mate, engineering laboratory technician, drug and alcohol counselor and as a chaplain. He earned his bachelor's degree in organizational studies at Bethel University, Masters of Divinity at Bethel Theological Seminary and a Postmasters Certificate in Pastoral Counseling at Seattle University. This oral history was conducted by EMU Historic Preservation graduate student Katrina Finkelstein as part of her final master's project, a study of commemorative place naming and memorialization in the landscape of the United States Marine Corps Bases.

In the Fall of 2022, Matt Jones’s Oral History Techniques class conducted a set of interviews documenting the stories behind the student unrest on Eastern Michigan University’s campus from 1966-1972. Pat Fry was an EMU student in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She was a member of the Student Liberation Action Movement, wrote for underground newspaper The Second Coming, and Communist activist. Pat dedicated her life to fighting for equality and justice for all, continuing to be an advocate until she passed away in 2023.

Harvey served two consecutive terms as sheriff between 1964 and 1972, and during that time he was tasked with managing the protests on EMU's campus. He was a strong individual in the Ypsilanti community, a force to be reckoned with  until he passed away in 2023.

In the Fall of 2022, the Eastern Michigan University Archives invited emerita Betty Brown-Chappell and alum Anarosa Mendoza King to sit down for an interview together. With lecturer Matt Jones mediating the conversation, the women talked about their careers in social work and what it means to them, their humble beginnings and journeys to EMU, and the importance of good mentors. Brown-Chappell and King reminisce on memories of conferences, Halloween parties, and family gatherings.

Aliya Bashir, an independent journalist covering India and Indian-administered Kashmir, recalled her experiences covering the impact of COVID-19 on women and their children. She reflected on the lack of women's representation in mainstream media, vaccination and health data, and the decision-making process in families. Despite the challenges of reaching sources in remote and vulnerable conditions and with little support as a freelance journalist, her reporting brought awareness to the gender gap and urged officials to collect data and build women-centric vaccination campaigns. She also commended more recognition of women journalists' work and minimizing the pay disparity between genders.

Danielle Keeton-Olsen, an American freelance journalist in Cambodia, recalled the ground situation in January 2020 and the COVID impact on local communities and businesses in Cambodia. She reviewed her journey of becoming a foreign correspondent. She commented on the business model of Cambodian media, the media environment, government control of media, media relationship with the general public, challenges, and opportunities as a freelancer in Cambodia. She also commented on the status of women, particularly women journalists in this society. She attributed her success to many role models and predecenters before her time and called for more public attention to and appreciation of reporting undercovered regions in South Asia.

Elettra Fiumi is a freelance documentary filmmaker who has strong family and professional ties in Italy and the U.S. Relocated to Switzerland right before the outbreak of COVID, Elettra had to innovate her filming approach when in-person interviews and filming were impossible during lockdowns. She compiled crowdsourcing from residents and curated the eyewitness footage and storytelling from a few photojournalists remotely to document the frontline impact of COVID-19 in Italy, which won the attention of a global audience and 17 international awards. In this interview, she revealed the behind-the-scene coordination of those productions, challenges for filmmakers, and gender stereotypes in the filming industry. She left some encouraging remarks to future generations.

Jess DiPierro Obert is an American visual journalist, producer, and filmmaker who splits her time between Mexico City, Brooklyn, and Haiti. She did investigative reporting on vaccine hesitancy and mental health issues in Haiti during the pandemic, which increased public awareness and conversation about COVID-related issues. In this interview, she recalled the ground situation in Haiti, covering communities that denied COVID-19, interviewing women victims of gang violence, threats from gang leaders, and other challenges as a woman freelancer.

Lenora Chu, a journalist based in Berlin, Germany, was covering the pandemic impact in Europe for the Christian Science Monitor. In this interview, she recalled her trip to China in January 2020 where the coronavirus originated, and a conference later in Seattle where the U.S. documented its first COVID death. She compared the public attitudes toward science, government orders, and journalists in the U.S. and Germany, and how the two countries handled disinformation and misinformation. She traced the cultural, political, and historical factors that may have resulted in the differences between the two countries. She commented on the challenges of maintaining a work-life balance during lockdowns, changes to work routines, and women journalists' contributions.

Megha Rajagopalan, a China correspondent and a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist, just moved to London, U.K. at the start of 2020 and worked on a project about the Chinese government's detention camp in Xinjiang province. In this interview, she recounted the reporting and production of the project that won her team the Pulitzer Prize in International Reporting in 2021. She revealed how her team combined investigative reporting, data mapping, and architecture into journalistic storytelling, and how they collaborated remotely when travel was restricted. She also reflected on her experiences corresponding in China and working for Buzzfeed News.

What began as a refusal of service by a local print shop to a small EMU student group quickly turned into a years-long battle over who was deserving of basic human rights. To the LGBTQ activists and community members documented here, they had always been present in the community: working, paying taxes, painting their houses, mowing their lawns, attending council meetings, and even serving on council. This ordinance battle was about more than just LGBT rights—it was about protecting the human rights of all Ypsilantians. On January 29th, 2022, Jones talked to community organizer, activist, and former Ypsilanti mayor Beth Bashert about her involvement with the passage of the ordinance. Member of Citizens for Community and co-chair of the Ypsi Campaign for Equality, Bashert was a fierce leader, working with other community members to keep the movement going strong. From mediating meetings, to contacting human rights groups across the country, to trying to stay afloat amidst it all, she worked tirelessly for the campaigns. She also recognized the importance of distinguishing between political campaigns and "hearts and minds" campaigns: To not to try to change opposing minds, but to get allies to vote in favor of the ordinance. Bashert and her co-chair Paul Heaton worked in tandem to keep the campaign's message clear, and to make sure everyone understood where it came from and where it was going. In this interview, she talks about what made the campaign work, the internal and external support they received, and how she's seen Ypsi change since 1279 was passed.

To the LGBTQ activists and community members documented here, they had always been present in the community: working, paying taxes, painting their houses, mowing their lawns, attending council meetings, and even serving on council. This ordinance battle was about more than just LGBT rights—it was about protecting the human rights of all Ypsilantians. On December 13, 2021, Jones met with long time Ypsilantian, figure-skating coach, and community activist, Gary Clark. Clark became involved with the ordinance efforts very early on, when his partner encountered protestors in Depot Town after Tri-Pride was denied service. From there, they called up their friends, neighbors, and fellow community members and held what would become the first Citizens for Community (C4C) meeting. C4C became the group that took on the fight for the first campaign and initial ordinance passage. With Clark's leadership, community ties, and strong sense-of-self, the campaign was able to effectively advocate for an ordinance and bring more visibility to the LGBT community in Ypsi. He understood the importance of bringing in other communities to support the effort, and even visited the very same churches who  strongly opposed the campaigns. In this interview, Clark shares a more in-depth look at C4C's work, the initial drafting of the ordinance, and the shift towards Ypsi Campaign for Equality for the defense.

On February 27, 2022, Jones met with EMU alum and former chair-person of Tri-Pride, Kathy Palmer. Palmer found herself at EMU after learning more about the Master's in Social Work program and comparing it to others she was considering. She took up a graduate assistantship from Kathleen Russell, and was eventually picked to serve as a Tri-Pride co-chair. Palmer was only directly involved with the ordinance effort for a short time, as the Tri-Pride complaint was filed in February, and she graduated in April. Despite this, she kept close ties to the community and stayed updated throughout it all, and her "outsider" perspective gave her a new awareness of the campaigns' impact. In this interview, Palmer describes that new awareness and appreciation and shares more of the values and beliefs behind Tri-Pride and its members.

On December 15, 2021, Jones talked with former EMU Director of University Publications and Student Media, and YCFE co-chair, Paul Heaton. Heaton arrived in Ypsilanti to work in media and communications at EMU, and remained somewhat on the outside of Ypsi civic life until the Tri-Pride incident in 1997. He became involved with the ordinance efforts early on, attending the first Citizens for Community meetings, and later became a co-chair of YCFE. Heaton worked in tandem with his community members and co-chair Beth Bashert to ensure the campaign would be successful. He was highly regarded for his expertise with communications and messaging, and is still credited with keeping the mission on task. Heaton had to manage the messages and ideas coming from his fellow organizers while also making sure the campaign's focus remained clear and cohesive. Throughout this interview he recalls the reasoning behind YCFE and how its mission worked, along with the ins and outs of working with conflicting opinions, and how he became involved with the campaigns in the first place!

Kirk Profit is a former member of the Michigan House of Representatives and currently works as a lawyer and legal consultant in his hometown of Ypsilanti, Michigan. In this interview, Profit speaks about his time as a student at the Roosevelt school, which he attended from kindergarten until 6th grade, leaving early as a result of Roosevelts impending closure. He explains how the education at Roosevelt was creative and innovative, why swimming was so popular among Roosevelt students, and discusses what elementary and middle school students did for fun in the 1960s. He also discusses his life after Roosevelt, exploring his early involvement with politics, developing a social consciousness, and the current state of education in Ypsilanti.

Bob Garfield  is a lifelong resident of Ypsilanti who attended the Roosevelt school in 7th grade. In this interview, Garfield discusses the year he spent at Roosevelt, noting that the lack of structure is what led him to transfer back to public school. He also talks about Ypsilanti's history, exploring how the landscape has changed, popular hangout spots for kids, and businesses that no longer exist. Garfield also speaks candidly about his experiences with substance use, working at the first Domino's pizza, and gushes with pride talking about his musically gifted adult son, J.T.

Mark Lee is a Class of 1983 alum and former EMU student body president now teaching marketing at Eastern's College of Business. Lee is also the host of EMU Today-TV and a notable public speaker. He has held several leadership positions, such as CEO and president of
the Lee Group, an independent marketing and consulting firm based in Plymouth, Michigan. As a student Lee ran track under the leadership of Coach Bob Parks, and as student body president he advocated for the building of the REC/IM on campus. Lee was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha and also helped develop EMU's Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations. During this interview he recounts growing up in Metro Detroit, his participation in campus life, and watching the University change over the years.

In this interview an anonymous parent and their child share their experiences with Ypsi Pride. Anon shares how they have been coming to Ypsi Pride for many years, and explains that while their child, who is autistic, does not normally like big gatherings they love pride events. Anon also explains how they did not meet another queer person until they were an adult so they want to expose their child to the beauty that exists in the queer community.

In this interview Ypsi native Kenneth Curtis shares their experiences with Ypsi Pride, the first of which they attended in 2017. Curtis's first Ypsi Pride inspired them to start a GSA [Gay-Straight Alliance] at their high school, and later opened the door for them to join the Ypsi Pride board in 2021. They explain the difficulties of throwing Pride during pandemic, the importance of community spaces, and the hopes that Ypsi Pride will continue to grow and improve.

Droste shares that this is the first year they fully considered themselves a part of the queer community, sharing that they love the drag shows and thinks that events like Ypsi Pride show that Ypsi cares about all of its residents.

In this interview Michael Faunce shares their experiences with Ypsi Pride, sharing that they attended one previously working the booth for their church, Blue Ocean. Faunce explains that the lead pastor is a lesbian so they feel very welcomed there, and in the larger Ypsi community in general. They explain that while Pride helps increase tolerance towards queer people they hope one day labels won't matter and people can just be accepted as they are.

In this interview longtime Ypsi resident Amber Fellows explains her experiences with Ypsi Pride, sharing that she attended the first one in 2015 and helped book live entertainment. Fellows explains that Pride is needed, but she finds more solace in other parts of the community, noting that Ypsi is known for being a queer haven. She also shares her experiences with Motor City Pride, impacts of the pandemic on Pride, and reminisces on running a zine table called Fag Rag Zines.

In this interview longtime Ypsi resident Grey Grant shares their Ypsi Pride experiences detailing that they first attended in 2021 to reunite with an old friend. Grant also details that they've been lucky finding a large queer community and queer spaces, and that their first pride was in their hometown of Winston Salem, NC, in the early 2000s. Grant also shares the importance of community for millenials and Gen Z, the joy of seeing so many trans people in Ypsi, and being happy to be at pride.

On January 20, 2025, Dr. Mary Frances Berry, former chairperson of the US Civil Rights Commission, discussed her role as an ad hoc advisor to the Eastern Michigan University (EMU) Black Student Association (BSA) during the 1969 student demonstrations. Berry, who taught at EMU from 1968 to 1970, highlighted the practical demands of the BSA, such as more black faculty and programs, which were largely met. She contrasted the BSA's success with the less successful anti-Vietnam protests. Berry also recounted her experiences as a war correspondent in Vietnam and her efforts to secure legal representation for Bob Smith during the EMU protests.

As the keynote speaker of an event organized by the EMU chapter of the Black Student Association (BSA), Yosef Ben-Jochannan visited Eastern Michigan University in 1976. Introduced by BSA spokesman Malek Ukeine, Yosef Ben-Jochannan examines historical criticism leveled against white America by African American activists. He discusses the erasure of black history from popular memory and education and condemns the pro-black movement for forgetting their African heritage and forefathers. Ben-Jochannan also criticizes black participation in Christianity and interracial relationships.

Chuck Coleman is a former Eastern Michigan University student activist. Before exiting the university in 1978, Coleman was a member of the Black Student Association, Campus Service Corps, and a student representative of the Office of Minority Affairs. Coleman played an important role for bettering conditions for students of color on campus.

Floyd Walton is an alumnus of Eastern Michigan University, graduating in 1973. Walton was a highly involved student activist serving as a member of the Campus Service Corps and the Black Student Association. Steve Spencer graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 1975 with a degree in speech and education and was an active member of the Black Student Association during his time on campus. Robert Smith is an alumnus of Eastern Michigan University who graduated from the university in 1971. During his time at EMU, Smith was involved with the Black Student Association and Campus Service Corps. Smith was instrumental in the creation of Black Demands and the takeover of Pierce Hall in February 20th, 1969.  Smith graduated from Eastern in 1971 with a double major in history and graphic arts. Smith went on to serve the communities of Detroit and Highland Park in roles at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, Wayne State University, and the Highland Park School District.

Glenda Kirkland was a vocal instructor with the EMU Department of Music and Dance from 1972 until 2009. Kirkland taught many courses in music at EMU and served as the director of the EMU Opera Workshop. She has also given many lectures and recitals with various opera companies and guest performed with luminaries such as  William Warfield, Gwyneth Jones, and Luciano Pavarotti. She’s been universally praised for her interpretive skills, her charisma, her prefect breath control and deep respect for the text’s open-hearted naiveté.
