We were sitting in the office going through the mountain of promos in our inbox, when we found an email by a British producer named Castro. We opened it, not knowing what to expect, and what we found was Toot Toot, one of the most addictive zouk bass tunes we've heard since the whole craze started in the Boiler Room. We just had to have it here and now. 

Join us in welcoming Castro, a British producer whose background as a percussionist and love of ethnic rhythms gives his tracks a distinctive bounce, which he complements with an extensive knowledge of the dancefloor's demands. In the latest track on the Upper Cuts series, Castro pairs up heavy drums with vibrant synths and colorful melodies, all under the hypnotic 90bpm pace that Buraka helped to popularize, with some moombah elements and vocal samples thrown in for good measure. 

Besides having one of the most addictive beats we've heard in months, Castro's first single Toot Toot is one of those tracks that just inspires us to have a good time. Let's play this one loud and bring the fun back to the dancefloor.

2014 is finally here and that means the Upper Cuts series is now officially one year old. After two seasons have passed and 20 tracks of great global club music sounds from all around the world have been released, it's time to keep raising the bar as a whole new season starts. 

For the first track of the Upper Cuts Season 3 we teamed up with one of the most promising young producers to arrive to the zouk bass scene: the one and only JSTJR (pronounced 'gesture'). The energetic beatmaker's distinct style fuses influences from all kinds of tropical-flavored genres, such as dancehall, jungle, moombah or even trap, making him one of the most unpredictable yet consistent artists of this developing scene. 

His latest creation - Panamania feat. Ma-Less - is a zouk bass banger if we ever heard one. Pounding drums and thick basslines provide the backbone for sexy, winding and hypnotic vocal samples to do their magic on the dance floor, while spaced-out synths proceed to make bodies bend and twist in all kinds of new shapes. 

Panamania feat. Ma-Less also serves as a powerful introduction to Enchufada's upcoming zouk bass compilation, scheduled to be dropping this February. 'We Call It Zouk Bass Volume I' will feature this and many other tracks by some of the artists that are (and have been) defining this exciting new genre since the very beginning. To celebrate 100 years of the Theremin, super producer Gaudi and friends have created an album of Theremin infused dub.

Developed in 1920 by Russian physicist Léon Theremin, the Theremin is an electronic device which works with magnetic fields and consists of one metal antenna controlled without physical contact. Predominantly a fairly niche instrument, it has featured in several styles of music since its creation, from classical works to sci-fi movie soundtracks, pop and rock.

Gaudi was supported in this tribute by five of the world's top dub producers - Mad Professor, Adrian Sherwood, Scientist, Dennis Bovell and Prince Fatty. All hugely respected individuals who have been representing the best of international dub production for the last 50 years, they have provided the riddims that underpin Gaudi's Theremin playing on this astonishing project.

As a solo artist, Gaudi has recorded over 20 albums, while as a producer he has hundreds of productions under his belt. In his 30 year career he has worked with legends of the reggae and electronic music worlds including Steel Pulse, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Michael Rose, Horace Andy, Michael Franti, Zion Train, Maxi Priest, The Beat, Sizzla, Dub Pistols, Hollie Cook, Dub FX, Youth, The Orb, Simple Minds, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Deep Forest, Trentemøller and Lamb.

As a Theremin player for over 25 years, Gaudi has often combined his passion for the instrument and for reggae music, playing it on several of his albums, but until now he has never dedicated an entire release to it. Known and lauded for putting his "dub-take" on many musical genres, '100 Years of Theremin (The Dub Chapter)' is Gaudi's brainchild.

Listening to this blissful out-of-body-experience of an album, where roots reggae meets the enigmatic and ethereal sounds of sci-fi, is a deep and pensive experience. Haunting and mellifluous melodies meets earthy, bassy grooves in an unlikely yet undeniably successful union.

The almighty Buraka Som Sistema join the Upper Cuts free download series on a mission to give the world yet another musical genre to dance to. The tropical downtempo madness of first 15 minutes of their now legendary Boiler Room set marked the introduction of Zouk Bass, a brand new tropical hybrid born from the meeting of the French Antillan rhythms of zouk - and its Lusophone relative kizomba - with the bass-heavy styles of the UK underground. 

Zouk Flute is the name of the track that brings the slow and sexy zouk rhythms to the 21st century clubs. A mischievous and downright hypnotic melody instantly puts you in the mood for dancing in dimly lit rooms, giving the style's tropical heritage a dangerous modern edge. While the charming synths reel you in, the heavy slow-paced beats and thick sub-bass pressure promise to keep you nailed to the dancefloor, ocasionally breaking the spell to ask the DJ for yet another rewind. 

As it happened all those years ago with the fast-paced Angolan rhythms of kuduro, yet another tropical revolution in electronic dance music can be traced back to Buraka Som Sistema's studio. While the beats radically change this time around, the need to make people dance their troubles away stays the same. Because dancing is always the best remedy, why not do it a bit slower?

After Branko kickstarted the Upper Cuts series with his stunning Njena Reddd Foxxx collaboration and Buraka Som Sistema contributed with the genre-defining Zouk Flute, now it’s time for another Buraka founding member to enter the series. We’re talking about Riot, the eclectic DJ and producer who started the global kuduro revolution with Branko and the rest of the crew, and is still turning heads on the Portuguese drum&bass and dubstep scene.

Since it was up to him to close the first Upper Cuts season in style, he decided to surprise everyone with a personal take on the fresh Zouk Bass genre by fusing slow Caribbean-influenced beats with the fast-paced rhythm of drum&bass. This unlikely blend has produced some amazing results and is already finding its way into the digital DJ bags of several prominent artists such as DJ Zinc, Toddla T, Brodinski, Nick Catchdubs, Dave Nada and Astronomar, among many others rushing to show support.
