Warping hypnotic Arabic melodies over a beat that manages to bring juke, cumbia and trap elements together to create something entirely different and new is no small feat, but this Italian maestro makes it seem so easy. "Kindir Surprise speaks of an identity distress, the distress that for many years prevented me from finding my place in my own person, the true Me. Then, i took a trip to Morocco in 2005, after 12 years without returning..."

"I was 28 years old, and about to rediscover a part of myself. The music, ever-present, spoke to me. The same music that used to leave me indifferent as a teenager in France, enamored with Hip Hop, funk, soul... and rejecting my parents' music, trying to create my own identity..."

"Walking through the aisles of the flea markets of Derb Ghallef, in Casablanca, I came across a box of about a hundred 60s-70s popular music 45 rpm records. When I asked for the price, the old man said, "Those are garbage, you won't do anything with them, take them for 0.5 dirhams each." I didn't hesitate."

"His voice still echoes in my head, as if he had thrown me a challenge... while offending our heritage. Thus was born the addiction, going to Morocco to feel that part of me, talking with the elders of my family before their final departure, and collecting all the records I could before they disappeared... it was like saving a part of myself by playing with time."

You may well have already noticed my mentions of Rob Clouth.  He’s one of the best producers there is, in my opinion.  Such original, hyper-detailed beautiful sound design and melodic forms, the complete package really. We have noticed one thing over the years of playing shows, meeting artists, exchanging music and having conversations with people all over the world. That we are surrounded by a community of musicians, producers and music lovers which acts as an inspiring, uniting force. For that reason this fourth Shika Shika compilation is called Union or Unión: "the action of joining together or the fact of being joined together".

These are 13 tracks of music without borders, music that unites, music that brings together different styles, rhythms, influences, languages and cultures to create something richer, something fresh, something different. That is how music evolves and has always evolved, uniting sounds and creating something new. 

We are really happy to present lots of artists who are new to the Shika Shika collective alongside some old friends. Hard to categorise so we let the tracks speak for themselves.
