Paul de Jong is best known as the cofounder, cellist and resident found sound savant of the beloved, defunct collage-pop duo, the Books. Five years after that band delivered their final album, The Way Out, to much acclaim, de Jong delivers his first solo album, IF.

IF sets the Books' early albums (particularly The Lemon of Pink) as a starting point, and elevates that beguiling sense of wonder and amazement to genuinely transcendent new heights. De Jong's ability to find the musical in the mundane has always been uncanny — it is part of what made the Books so magical – and that gift is what makes IF such a marvelous curiosity, and such a true pleasure to hear. In de Jong’s world, everything around him is a potential instrument: his mind-bogglingly vast collection of forgotten private press regional folk records, spoken-word oddities of indeterminate origin unearthed in discarded thrift store piles, and various everyday household utensils that we tend to take for granted. One man’s trash is de Jong’s tool to craft yet another treasure.

Featuring a handful of friends and family as musical guests, IF steers a course from joyously eccentric folk-pop to humorously inside-out jazz, resulting in a refreshing piece of outsider art with a replay value that's off the charts.

I spent some time attempting to piece together the whole conversation from Gene Hackman and Francis Ford Coppola's "The Conversation" (1974) in sequence... Probably didn't get it right, but here it is anyway! 

"To my knowledge, there hasn't been a widely known or published comprehensive effort to piece together the entire recorded conversation from Francis Ford Coppola's 1974 film "The Conversation." The film, which stars Gene Hackman as surveillance expert Harry Caul, revolves around his recording of a conversation between a young couple in San Francisco's Union Square.

The fascinating aspect of the film is how the meaning of the recorded conversation changes as Harry repeatedly listens to it throughout the movie, especially the pivotal line "He'd kill us if he got the chance." The film intentionally presents fragments of this conversation at different points, with Harry's interpretation evolving as he improves the audio quality and gains additional context.

Some film scholars and enthusiasts have analyzed these fragments to understand the narrative structure, but I'm not aware of any official or major fan project that has compiled the complete conversation in chronological order with all the audio cleaned up. If such a project exists, it would likely be found in academic film studies or in detailed analysis videos by film critics.
It's an interesting idea, though - reconstructing the complete conversation would provide a fascinating perspective on this classic thriller that explores themes of privacy, technology, and interpretation."

The second edition of our new mixtape series called 'Anette Halbe Stunde' (A Nice Half Hour) features WOX who is mixing a couple of his favorite tracks on vinyl from Brasil. The emphasis is on funk influenced brazilian music from the 70s.

Anette Halbe Stunde 009 it is. This time with lövely konkrit, who is part of our friends at the Antime label. Plus he has written some band infos for some of our artists too from time to time. So it's all family in this one. He is a music enthusiast and DJ, but first of all a journalist, that's why he wrote us these nice words about his mix:

A few years back, I started making recordings wherever I would go in this world. They are usually short, but at the same time gigantic failures; absolutely devoid of meaning and of no aesthetic appeal to me nor, I think, anyone else. However, they do serve their purpose as madeleines, if you will, triggers for memories that only I and I alone have. I’ve used this mix to collect some of them in one place together and combined them with songs that serve a similar purpose for me. Overall, those have very conflicting messages. But I suppose that's what it means to remember.
