Trio & Tape

Etude No. 2 for hexaphonic tape and live electronics. A hex guitar is simply a normal electric guitar, fitted with a special pickup that allows each string to be processed or spatialized individually.

Upon entering the campus of Trinity College Dublin it is striking how much the character of the ambient sound changes, as the din of traffic and pedestrians which dominates outside the college walls recedes into the background as you emerge from the narrow passageway of the front gate. This sense of liminality and of passing through a threshold into an entirely different space is the focus of this tape piece entitled Of Town and Gown. This soundscape composition is constructed from field recordings made around the outskirts of the campus, which are then manipulated, processed and combined with a sound from the heart of the university, namely the commons bell located in the campanile. In this way the piece explores the relationship between the university and the rest of the city (between town and gown) through the blending and relating of these different sounds from both inside and outside the college walls.

Pond Studio

These two files demonstrate some distance processing of a b-format recording, specifically the addition of some early reflections to the W channel.
Each sample is decoded for binaural using the YouTube HRTF set and a fixed orientation (90 degrees, and -30 degrees respectively).
Each sample begins with 2 bars of material unprocessed, then 2 bars with the early reflections added, 2 bars again without, and finally two bars with the reflections added in again.

Harmonic Shake - for augmented electric guitar and live electronics

This piece was composed during a Creative Lab held in the National Concert Hall in Dublin as part of the 2013 New Music Dublin festival. The guitar and guitarist are fitted with a variety of sensors which capture additional information such as the orientation of the guitar and the movement and position of the guitarist's right hand.

This gestural information is used to transform and move the sound of the guitar in space around the listener. Particular gestures can be mapped to specific effects and movements of sound which allows the musician to perform in a direct and intuitive way without the need for computer keyboards, footswitches or other indirect means of control.

This performance was recorded with a binaural microphone so for best results, listen back on headphones.

Harmonic Shake (take 2)

Enda Bates is a composer, musician and producer based in Dublin.

His music includes both acoustic and electroacoustic contemporary music and multi-channel, tape based pieces, and the use of spatially distributed sounds is a major feature of his work. He has received various commissions and awards including the 37th Florilege Vocal de Tours, the 2008 Irish National Choir of the Year competition, the 2009 Gaudeamus Music Prize shortlist and the 2010 Música Viva Competition.

His work has been performed by the Crash Ensemble, the Doelen Quartet, Trio Scordatura, the Dublin Guitar Quartet, the Bridgewood Ensemble, New Dublin Voices, the Spatial Music Collective, and at the 2008 International Computer Music Conference (ICMC2008), the Printing House Festival of New Music, the Mantua Festival, the Dublin Electronic Arts Festivals (DEAF07, 08 & 09) and Soundings 0402 in the Daghda Space in Limerick.

He also regularly performs with bands such as the Spook of the Thirteenth Lock, Miriam Ingram and Fairlights and has produced and recorded for the likes of the Spook of the Thirteenth Lock, Somadrone, Miriam Ingram and Daniel Figgis.
