Montréal-based musician and composer Kara-Lis Coverdale gives concerts made for full body immersion, multi layered through multi timbral synths, her computer a virtual organ engine. Couched in symphonic, post sacred tonalities and harmonies, the music on Coverdale’s releases Aftertouches (on Sacred Phrases) and A 480 (on Constellation Tatsu) uses virtual sounds from vocal and instrumental sources to confront traditional genres and consolidate them in the artist’s own precise ways. Currently an organist and music director at St. John’s church in Montréal, Coverdale contributed piano and keyboards on friend and mentor Tim Hecker’s Virgins album in 2013 and most recently has collaborated with LXV (musician David Sutton) on their 2015 album, released by Umor Rex. Her live set for MUTEK 2015 draws on that album and recent compositions of pipe organ, sensorial electronics and glittering drones while leaving room for inspired improvisation.

As you'll see, we're sticking to our promise of maintaining a more frequently updated mix series and throwing Forecast 32 out into the audiosphere, by way of Pianola's record shelves. Known as Yohei Kunitomo to friends and family, he curates the Experimental/Avantgarde sections in one of Tokyo's leading record stores, as well as being one of the many DJs and diggers making up the Ideala crew, who run deep listening sessions each Thursday at Forestlimit over in Hatagaya. Having met Stewart during his trip out east, Pianola very kindly pieced together this pleasantly discordant hour of music for us and we're incredibly happy to launch it out into the digital cosmos for you to do with it as you please.

Victor De Roo - Guest Mix

Just over a year ago I became aware of something bubbling under the surface in Latvia after hearing Belgian label Stroom’s first NSRD releases. My interest grew after my friend Michael Klausman included a Seque track on a mix he did to accompany a book of poetry he did for us. Then again when Stroom released another beguiling document of that scene, a compilation focussing on Ingus Bauskenieks, and Musiques Electroniques Actuelles released a compilation of works by Latvian industrial provocateurs USOCA. 

Over the last few months this interest has turned into a bit of an obsession, as it often does with me, and I’ve delved a little deeper in this compelling underground electronic music and art scene, mostly based in and around the Latvian capital of Riga in the 80s and 90s. I am by no means an expert on this, just a fascinated onlooker. 

On this show I play a selection of works, most of which were originally released and on 1/4” reel-to-reel tapes, and distributed by copying the reels for friends. The artists were influenced by the insurgent DIY spirit magnitizdat, the re-copying and self-distribution of recordings that were not sanctioned by the Soviet Union. At the time, the release and distribution of music was outlawed unless released on government run labels (such as Melodia). However people were allowed to own reel-to reel tape recorders, and by means of dubbing illicit music travelled from person to person.

In the mix, a live recording from Tanner Bar in Helsinki, half of the mix made without proper working headphones. Sliding through genres and styles, a lot of Finish music, and obscure tunes. A special listening experience for sure.
