For the next part of our guest mix series, we’re honored to welcome Benedikt Frey. An active musician, label co-owner, and DJ, who has tirelessly supplied the market with his recordings since the beginning of the last decade, through labels such as ESP Institute, Hivern Discs, and Craigie Knowes. Just as Detroit built on the atmosphere of the post-industrial era of the 80's, Benedikt draws inspiration from the greatest technological change of the 90's, the transition from analog to digital. He talked to us about the risks, issues, and opportunities in the record industry, shirtless pictures on instagram, and obviously, music.

Athenian Aggelos Baltas has been producing music for almost 15 years now, with his Anatolian Weapons project gathering both local and international praise for its bold blend of disparate styles and influences, spanning a wide spectrum of psychedelic and global dance music.

Resident DJ at key points Astron Bar and Bios in his hometown, he also plays regularly at clubs all over Europe, while making acclaimed mixes for platforms like Digital Tsunami, Knekelhuis, Les Yeux Orange and Sameheads.

He restlessly re-edits, remixes or brings to life fertile collaborations, with his musical style being praised from respected publications such as The Wire, Stamp The Wax and more, releasing on high profile labels such as Beats In Space, Emotional Response, Dark Entries, Invisible INC, Lurid Music and Kame House.

Charlotte Bendiks is part of the Keychange programme 2020-2021, supported by the Creative Europe programme of the European Commission. A DJ, a producer, and a positive thinker, she spent the last years exploring music, people, life and places.

From her home town Tromsø, where she ran her own clubseries, actively shaped the Insomnia Festival, and released two records on Mental Overdrive’s Love OD label, to Cologne, where she cooperated with artists like Coma, Lena Willikens, and developed a long lasting mutual love affair with the Salon des Amateurs. She has been traveling ever since and played, danced, loved, and laughed her way around the globe- from Buenos Aires’ infamous Dengue Dancing Parties, to festival sites in Hanoi, Montevideo, Marseille, and Berlin. Laurent Richard is a Parisian visual artist, record collector and selector under the name of DJ Sundae. Having been immersed in the skateboarding scene since his own early days, Laurent evidently knows his way around niche subcultures, music, outsider art and all things expressive, treasuring obscurities through his current record label Idle Press. DJ Sundae has also been the person behind “No Weapon Is Absolute” on NTS Radio with Cosmo Vitelli, the curator behind a few stellar records, the runner of what was Hollie Records, an ace behind the club decks and much more, all detailed further in our interview.

What a mess of a year. Each one of us has strolled through loneliness in a strikingly new way, isolated and immobile. The dancefloors haven’t been this cold in decades. They're now the host of nothing but memories: you can still hear the muffled echoes from the frenzy they use to witness. Still, our raving past is not as far as it feels and our celebratory future is not as distant as it may seem. 

We want to put an end to the year with one of those echoes that we were lucky enough to register: a bit more than a year ago Lena Willikens joined us at Ankali and gave color to one of the last nights of December. The electric feeling of those hours is bound to make this cold time a little warmer, a little easier to handle. 

The winter will pass. We will dance again.
