Chicago. Detroit. New York. London. Tuscany. The beautiful Italian region conjures up many impressions: the timeless artworks and architecture of Florence, the fresh flavours of the food and wine produced in its lush landscape, even the famous white Carrara marble that’s dug from the ground and exported around the world. But probably the last thing you’d associate it with is electronic music. Until now.

Luca Bacchetti’s debut album “SECRET WORLD” is a work almost 15 years in the making. It’s also one that required the endlessly touring DJ to traverse the world numerous times before an inner call came to return home to Italy to record it. Having earned a reputation for crafting club cuts, a fact underlined by releases on the world’s most recognisable labels, from Wagon Repair, Ovum, Mule Musiq, All Day I Dream, Crosstown Rebels, Culprit to Defected and his own @Endless-Worldwide imprint, it’s a radical sonic departure. But it’s one that reflects both his homecoming and the journey to get there. ”With this, I entered a new world I’ve never shown before,” he says.

After spending ten years between Italy and Barcelona, his bases to play everywhere from Tokyo’s Womb to DC10 in Ibiza, in 2017 he moved back to his native Tuscany. Here, at the beginning of 2018, he decamped for two weeks to a bungalow in Il Ciocco. An area of exceptional natural beauty, he was joined by friends and musicians Stefano Onorati (keyboards), Andrea Guzzoletti (trumpet) and Leo Di Angilla (percussion). All Italian, their sole intention was to capture the ineffable feeling that had drawn Luca back. “We make a living with this job and there are always compromises,” says Luca on his past experience of the music industry. “With the album I aimed to be totally free, I just followed my instinct.”

The result is a masterful vision of electronica swelling with emotional contours as majestic as the lands that inspired it. Title track “Secret World” is epic on the scale of the grand Apennines Mountains, while “Awakenings” evokes spring sunshine with soft, tentative piano. The album also captures the countries Luca has fallen in love with on his way. “Black Swan” his opening track playing for Robot Heart at last year’s Burning Man festival in Nevada, USA trips out in a squeal of psychedelic guitar. “La Ruta Del Sur” and “Fervor De Buenos Aires”, meanwhile captures the distinct melodies and rhythmic complexity of South America, and the contemplative “After The Silence” features two Balinese Rindik musicians recorded after Nyepi Day, a day of national silence.

Growing up in the tiny village of Pieve Fosciana, there were no record shops or clubs. Radio was Luca’s saviour and he followed its lure into DJing, production, then, since 2005, playing around the world. His path has encompassed a wide musical love of everything from Bristolian trip-hop to Detroit techno, but these city’s histories aren’t his own truth.

Luca’s secret world is no longer secret. You can apply the same go to adjectives to the album as used to describe Tuscany at large: ‘simple’, ‘honest’, ‘beautiful’, ‘earthy’, ‘romantic’. In the end, language fails to capture the sublime nature of his roots. Next to experiencing them directly, the closest you’ll get is “Secret World” - an alchemical transformation of the images in Luca’s head into the universal language of music.

The collaboration with Modular Project continues in 2019 with the release of 'Vivid Poison', their new single.
Alberto Iovine and Alessandro Fumagalli started to work together in 2015, joined by a strong love for music and vintage synths, and now they are running their own record label Nothing Is Real, spreading their music in Italy and around Europe.

Their electronic style is influenced by new wave and 80’s sound fusing powerful drums, pulsating synths for an emotional impact. ‘Vivid Poison' is the perfect example of this mixture.
Originally conceived after a jamming in the studio, after listening to a lot of Italo disco music, the song comes to life thanks to the collaboration with the artist Eleonora Zaripova.
The Russian-Tartarian artist now living in Berlin has a classical music education and jazz-experience. Her beautiful voice transmits fragility and strength, melancholy and soul, and fit perfectly with the music produced by Alberto and Alex, taking us back in time.

The release also includes two valuable remixes. After her debut on Rebirth in 2017 Perel is back on the label with two strong remixes combining the original vocals with her unique 90’s synth pop sound.
Tel Aviv artist Nadav Spiegel aka Autarkic, follows his productions on Disco Halal, Golf Channel and Turbo with a powerful remix, injecting his modern Israeli vibe, filthy, intensive yet emotional.

Luca Bacchetti: I could say 15 years, as stated on the liner notes of the album, but in actual fact it was recorded in 10 days and arranged and mixed in a month… since then so many things have happened and it’s now ready for release after a year and a half. (...)

On his debut album Melt, Stevie R brought us the sounds of rebetronica, his very own fusion of the rebetiko music he was raised on during his childhood in Greece with the latest in forward-looking off kilter house and techno music.

Allying himself with the Egyptian poet and glitch producer CERPINTXT and Turkish singer/songwriter Djanan Turan, he delivered a wonderful LP. Now, through the Editions of Kincaid, Simple Symmetry and Martin Buttrich, the album is presented in a new light through a set of fresh and powerful remixes.

They do not disappoint. Londoner Kincaid (Aeon, Anjunadeep, Futureboogie) reimagines Botsa Botsa into a killer starry, widescreen slow disco cut powered by a hypnotic acid line. Meanwhile, Disco Halal heroes Simple Symmetry draw inspiration from rave-era Prodigy to create a reworking of Delias, which is equal parts incredible and insane. Dancefloor destruction is assured.

The package finishes with two versions of Gkii from the legendary Martin Buttrich, who draws on a classic and rolling deep house vibe for his glitch inspired Class A Edition, along with his Blib Dub. The days of rave are here again. Part I has fully delivered; watch out for Part II of Stevie R’s Melt Editions in the New Year.

An outer-space vibe is struck right from the off on DJ T. 's reinterpretation of ‘Bedouin Ride’, as ‘80s synth sounds combine with emotive chords and deep bassline sequences that rumble down low. Kiwi’s dynamic version of ‘Bazar Break Battle’ offers a slick balance of sweeping leads, the original’s captivating vocals and sharp snares to produce a hazy and haunting production.

Welcome to 2021: Darkroom Dubs crack open their 18th year with a warm welcome to two new members to the roster… Santiago producer Alejandro Paz and Berlin duo Local Suicide with ‘Directions’, complete with remixes from Undo, DJs Pareja and Velax.

Cold, cutting edge and boasting a full-spectrum of sounds, there’s a slight irony to dropping a release called ‘Directions’ when none of us know where the hell we’re going right now. But we sure as hell know what we’re listening to. And boy do we love it.

As proved on previous collaborations between the two acts on labels such as Nein and Aeon, Alejandro’s weighty production dynamics and Local Suicide’s purring noir soul complement each other to the very last transient. Part new romantic, part techno, all dancefloor; each track is a story just as much as it’s a song. ‘Directions’ captures the frustrations and intensity of isolated life in the 21st century and ‘Splish Splash’ takes a provocative, playful stance with its acid house bass plunges and cosmic squiggles.

It’s loaded with a full range of heavyweight remixes from a rollcall of exceptional talent: Undo gets a slinky bass guitar in the mix, DJs Pareja get wonky and bumpy while Velax fuses more grit and intensity in his special Isolated remix. The world may continue to spin backwards but we know where we’re heading… and it’s artists like Alejandro Paz and Local Suicide who are helping us get there. Take care of each other.
