Our first EP from our new home out West (after being briefly homeless, of course). This one brings together a number of tunes we've been wanting to do for years and finally fleshes out a few that have been back-of-the-napkin ideas for just as long. Everything was done at our new music home, the Carhole Sound Foundry in San Marcos, CA.

Briefly Homeless

The collection of tracks in Abstractions represent 25 years of music that, although finished, never really had a home. Curated and remastered into a cohesive body of work, these ambient works mix physical and electronic instruments to create moods, from happy contemplation to dark brooding.

This Is Endless Blue

What started as a simple promotional video shoot of Endless Blue's live show turned into "Live from the Garage", a full-fledged live album and accompanying set of live videos. Since it formed in 2003, Endless Blue has always been at its heart a live band. It has evolved and reshaped over the years, from a duo with a keyboard and a guitar to a full-fledged rock-style lineup and back again. "Live from the Garage" captures the band's live performance after 22 years on stages big, small, and non-existent.

I Hung My Head (Johnny Cash Cover) - Briefly Homeless

Grabbed a few ancient samples from the vaults and worked them up into a proper arrangement. Played a little maybe OK bass, found the proper drum sound, fiddled with the Ableton electric piano modeler... Choruses are a little short, so the verse vocals will have to slap, but I'm feeling a little disco weirdo thing will do nicely.

Green Eyes

Why is October always stupidly busy? I had to force myself to sit down for this one, but then I found the main beat and the rest flowed from it. Simple repeating bassline with a varying verse/chorus feel.

Weekly Beats #40 - Didn't Wanna

Busy week, had to quick get this one done. Had some inspiration to do a very minimal track, using just a few instruments to get the point across. All about the automation, a lot of which I did live. Pretty pleased with the result.

Jamuary 2025 - Day 2 - Cats

Had a little extra time with this one, which let me play the parts live instead of looping. Had the idea for the main baritone part banging around my head all day, but then it came out completely different. Piano came next -- chorus part was really my favorite.

Jamuary 2025 - Day 14 - Book Club

Wrote the piano part originally on Day 3 of Jamuary 2024, built it into a real song today. Got my proper Robert Smith on now that I have a baritone. 

Jamuary 2025 - Day 15 - Blind Dog

This one starts very quiet but does not stay that way... Did full tracking for the guitars and bass, as looping would have made it hella boring. Getting those performance nuances makes it work.

Jamuary 2025 - Day 26 - Blue Room

Studio was occupied most of the night, so I wrote this one in an easy chair. Kept it very simple, but it's missing vocals, which I have a topline in mind that I tossed on a voice memo but not here.

Unexpected Guests is a collection of odds and ends -- songs unearthed during the brutal lockdown months. One track was originally a beat for a hip-hop artist, another is a track originally recorded nearly 20 years ago and rebuilt from the ground up, yet another was rescued from a film soundtrack that was never finished, much less released. This EP lets these songs breathe again and see the light of day.

This was originally written for a (of all things) revolutionary war period piece soundtrack. Laura improved over the top of the guitar part and I sliced it up and arranged it. Added samples and other instruments later to fill out the full song.

Jamuary 2026 - Day 1 - Feng Shui

Bass line and beat rattling around in my head today. Found a killer electric piano sound and laid down the melody. Built around that. A bit faster today, got it wrapped in a little over 2 hours

A bit quicker today, under 2 hours. Bass line was where it started with drums shortly after. A lot of time spent on the chorus chord progression, though, as the bass worked but I couldn't quite figure out which chords were implied by it...

Jamuary 2026 - Day 3 - Lights Down

Been leaning pretty hard on my AstroLab 37 for inspiration. Digging through the eleventy billion presets in Analog Lab looking for the good stuff leads to tracks it seems. This one was pretty straightforward. Had to play "find the chords" again for the chorus and ended up doing some pretty interesting inversions to keep it interesting.

Endless Blue, a trip-hop and downtempo fusion duo, was formed in 2003 by Minneapolis-based musicians Nick Mitchell and Laura Hillman Mitchell. Endless Blue's music blends sultry and soulful melodies with vintage synths, jazz-filled bass lines, bluesy guitar riffs, and lo-fi beats.

Over the last 20 years Endless Blue has collaborated with numerous musicians and has recorded 13 albums and EPs with a combination of original tracks and covers in Endless Blue's signature style.
