Faded covers, dust in time.

I’d sit beneath that old porch light,
Drop the needle, hum on nights.
Mama said the city shined,
But I found gold in old steel twine.
Sang along with every tune,
Dreamed the songs would find me soon.
Never thought I’d leave this land,
But life don’t always play your hand.
Country pretty in the big city,
Where concrete drowns but can’t take me.
Tried to change my sound, tried to steal my name,
But twang don’t bend, twang don’t fade.
Country pretty in the big city,
Every chord still holds my heart.
May not fit their silver shine,
But country sings right through the dark.
City crowds don’t know my songs,
Say the words are too damn wrong.
Tried to drown me out in pop and chrome,
Tried to carve me into stone.
Said my boots don’t match the glow,

But country’s stitched inside my skin,
And real don’t fold, real won’t dim.
Country pretty in the big city,
