February 2010:  Matt Handley and Andrew Stanley, aka Yolanda Be Cool, already making waves in what they called the “party tech” scene, and label mate Duncan Maclennan, aka DCUP, creating a similar stir on the Nu Disco tip, were sitting next to each other on a flight back from a gig when the seeds were sown for their collab, “We No Speak Americano.”
Inspired by artists such as Riva Starr and Zombie Disco Squad, YBC had a version that sparked the interest of DCUP who offered to add his touch to the mix. After 2 sessions, they sent their demo to Sweat It Out head honcho AJAX who instantly signed it to his label. And the rest is history.
Starting in the underground, with support from house luminaries such as Switch, Jesse Rose and Round Table Knights, then heading to the top of Beatport, then to the charts, where it went to number one in 17 countries and went platinum in, amongst others, the USA, Germany, the UK and Australia, selling over 5 million copies, YBC and DCUP soon found themselves in huge demand.
Festival headline shows followed and the boys have since traversed the globe many times over permeating the world with their brand of fun and fruity, sample based quirk house.
But with all the touring, the guys found it hard to find the time to get together. Until now.
As Andrew said, “We always intended to do more tunes together, but we just never seemed to be able to be in the same room for long enough. Then Duncan moved to Melbourne and for a while, I guess we just did our own thing.”
Duncan takes up the story, “As much as we wanted to do more tunes together, apart from finding the time, we also knew that finding a sample with the same magic as Americano was a must. We didn't want to just put out tunes for the sake of it. Fast forward to now, and it just felt right to get back in the studio. We had been passing sample ideas back and forth for a while and we all just fell in love with Sugar Man. It felt right.”
So after 4 years, the boys are back together with Sugar Man, which re-envisions the classic 1970’s tune by Rodriguez. Not only that, but the boys are back on the road together with a national “Sugar Man” tour set to begin in Newcastle this Friday, 10 October and a special “Sugar Man” mix for Triple J’s mix up set to air Saturday 11 October jam packed with exclusives.
With many more tunes in the pipeline, the world is excited to see how many soundtracks to summers they have in them.

The album Synemotion, is a journey through the complex emotional states we experience when we are overwhelmed by concerns and fears – escapist feelings in the song, “Run Away”, anger and frustration in “Rumpus” – wanting to cower and hide in “Subterfuge” – longing and nostaglia in “Elegy” and the experience of disappointment and let-down in the song “Deception”. Finally, letting go and receiving the feeling in the song “Reception” – and the awareness and sensation of irony knowing it will all start over again in the “World of Warcraft”.

The title track, “Synemotion” expresses in words this entire journey from pain and fear to release and hope. But most importantly the song uncovers how we cope with pain, fear, disappointment, depression, embarrassment and futility, it uncovers what actually happens to us, when we are overwhelmed by experience, and with a strange twist of perception, gifts the listener a path out of the darkness and despair, into an even more compelling and complex palette of emotions and sensations. The song gives hope and strength to walk through life even with wounds and disfigurement and have an even greater experience than before.

The Story of an Angel and the Ballad “Love Will Heal” 

A short time after the release of the metal album, "Synemotion", I went to the studio and laid down the instrumentals for a new song idea.

A close friend overheard it, walked in and said, “That melody might make a good love song.”

"No, really," they said, “Just strip out all the instruments and simplify the melody. It is for a love song.”

“I don’t know anything about love,” I said, pretty defiantly as I turned away.

My friend paused, looked at me with a mixture of concern and sadness and finally said, “You know what love is, of course you do."

“Besides,” they said, “I’ve read some of that stuff you write in that black journal slash lyric book you have lying about.”

I felt a tinge of melancholy after that conversation. Over the next weeks, I dropped the song, and even though there were some great reviews about the new album, things were looking disheartening and uncertain.

Usually, at times like those I turn to my lyric book but it was nowhere in sight.

I asked my friend if they had seen it. They said no.

Four days later, the book was on my laptop with a note: “OH., you know what love is.”

The lyrics to a song called, “Love Will Heal” were on a sheet of white paper.

The words appeared strangely familiar.

I quickly flipped through my journal and it dawned on me that the song was composed of sentences from various entries all stitched and woven together in this exquisite manner.

Attached was my melody line from the previous song and an idea for pre-chorus and chorus for the piano.

It did not take me long to figure out what “angel” did this. They told me later they felt moved, dropped everything they were doing for days and nights as the song pieced together.

I hope you find this song as beautiful as I do. I am not sure yet if this will, be part of an EP next spring or this song just stands on its own for what it is, but I feel certain it had to come out now as it is and that this song could help others heal their souls as much as it did for me.
