noun: an apple or other fruit blown down from a tree or bush by the wind

life can feel like a series of windfalls at times, but in reality, you spend your time and put yourself in the places where fruit is able to grow in abundance. it is only a consequence of your work that apples may fall at your feet

hello again world! my goal in life is to enhance my perspective. to see New York from the street and from the top of a skyscraper provides 2 entirely different perceptions of the city. for starters though, i’m fortunate enough to have roof access from my bedroom window. i spent a good part of last year up here. there’s something about being on the rooftop at sunrise and sunset, watching the day as it comes and goes. i find that it’s a great place to clear my head. the world below moves along to its steady rhythm as i observe from a birds eye view. i tried to put that in an instrumental 💙

‘daisugi’ is the first single and the title track to my upcoming beat tape to be released independently over the course of this summer

living in an era of global climate change, it has become more important to consider our direct relationship to nature. sometime in 15th century Japan, a horticulture technique called daisugi was developed in Kyoto. written 台杉 and literally meaning platform cedar, the technique yielded a tree that resembled an open palm with multiple trees growing out of it vertically. daisugi was developed to create a sustainable harvest of timber from a single tree to minimize forest space used. the timber it yielded known as taruki are perfectly round and straight, and are commonly used in roofing of Japanese architecture.

to me, daisugi feels like a metaphor for the way i’d like to see my life go. my goal is to cultivate many new ‘trees’ with love and care on top of one tree that has a strong foundation. the path will not be vertical, but i’m keen to see how the branches might twist and turn in the sunlight along the way. thank you to all who have listened and supported me while watching my growth as an artist
