The Sleeping Cave w/ Sonia Surma - 12/12/2024

J'ai toujours pensé que mon rapport à la musique était profondément conditionné par le fait de ne connaître aucun autre espace de vie que la ville. Étant ado et vivant dans une giga métropole mal desservie, je passais énormément de temps à marcher ou dans les transports en commun. Toutes ces heures, passées à me déplacer, je les passais aussi à écouter du son. Du coup, dans mon esprit d'ado, ce que je voyais était constamment une sorte de "clip" des sons que j'écoutais, surtout depuis que j'écoute du Burial, du Clams Casino, du Shlohmo, etc. Encore aujourd'hui, j'ai la sensation que ces morceaux capturent particulièrement bien la sensation d'être en déplacement en observant la vie en ville, la nuit. C’est à ce topique que je voudrais dédier un épisode prochain, dans lequel j’essaierai d’étudier le thème de la ville dans la musique et de la manière dont il a évolué au fil du temps.

Bref, le mix que je vous propose aujourd’hui en est une sorte d'introduction et s’inscrit dans cet esprit : il rassemble des morceaux que j’écoute, ou que je pourrais écouter, en rentrant chez moi tard le soir, après avoir dansé toute la nuit ou bu un coup avec des amis. Cette "scène de vie" m’apparaît particulièrement digne d’intérêt, car elle porte en elle une grande partie de la trace de notre existence. Elle raconte ce qui est essentiel dans notre vie : notre vie sociale, nos loisirs, notre manière de faire corps avec la société et avec la ville. En plus, je trouve que ces sons traduisent très bien ce mélange d’émotions et de sensations après une soirée.

Sinon, je tiens à remercier mon amie Mélissa, qui m’a donné cette idée en me parlant de son SoundCloud Wrapped 2024. Elle avait remarqué que ses tracks les plus écoutées étaient celles qu’elle écoutait en rentrant chez elle tard le soir. Ce qui m’a donné envie de faire une mixtape de 30 minutes pour celles et ceux qui rentrent chez eux, sous la lumière des lampadaires, accompagnés du bruit de la ville et de sa musique.

Bamboo Shows presents today the second opus of its 'vai a casa, sei ubriaco!' cassette series focusing on sunitty, an Italian reinterpretation of Fourth World Music through the prism of the world wide web.

_______ POLONIUS - ANTIQUE FANTASIA VOL. 4: POLONIUS 2
After introducing Babau for the inaugural cassette, the second installment of the sunitty focus showcases another contributor of the “Vapordub” V/A, with Egyptian Seif Gaber aka Polonius, dear friend of ArteTetrA, where he released the “Anaxia” and “Shades of Paradise” timeless yet time-bending cassettes (January and March 2019).

For the occasion the Milano-based musician exhumed the fourth opus of his Antique Fantasia series, a saga of six demo-tapes recorded between 2015 and 2018. Here’s the plainly entitled “Polonius 2”, a particularly eccentric segment of the aforementioned series. An album he has reworked and redefined over the years, initially inspired by Cocteau and maybe also a bit by Picasso. A translation of their simple, fresh line drawings and the distinctive flavor of that era through impulsive, offhand and elusive sounds. However, over the years this album became more about “gods, demigods and odd beings frolicking naked on flying checkerboards”, according to Polonius himself.

Delving into fourth-world abstractions and low-fidelity design, freeform creativity delivers here spontaneous exuberance, in Gaber‘s very own mischievous style. The piano checkerboard scrolls voluptuously, its ivory and ebony keys a canvas for his sonic alchemy. Synths soar and flirt with lively rhythms taking from the tribal folklore, creating a soundscape that appears both traditional and fanciful. Polonius' pataphysical tapestry unfurls an unlimited panorama of fantasized, unthought-of realms where the boundaries between genres and cultures dissolve.

"The aquatic is a concentric point of reflection within the latest release for Enmossed, procured as the split pairing of compositions by Finnish artists Kati Roover and J Koho. Both artists cull medial studies, collaborative processes, field recording, and geographically informed identitarian positionings in the audio works cultivated for cassette. Kati Roover’s aphotic meditations span across one side of the cassette, chiefly mirroring reflections on her Izhorian heritage, hydrofeminism thinking, and whale song captures. For the other side of the cassette, J Koho takes frameworks from Sound Studies paradigms to apply within his processed field recording efforts. Here, both artists service the latest edition of Enmossed’s ENMS catalog with mediated field recordings and sculpted isolatory liquidity formalism. Somewhere inside, the listener can be positioned enveloped in the dewy, aqueous sonorous realm of these two Finnish composers."

Kati Roover is a Helsinki-based, multidisciplinary artist. Her practice spans across the mediums of moving image, sound, photography, text and installations, draws upon and addresses a broad range of topics that are connected - from human, place and elemental interactions, mythopoetics, animisms and hydrofeminism, to the natural sciences and ecology.

J. Koho works extensively with sound and acts in many different roles in the field of sound art. Koho’s listening based artistic practice combines the methods, techniques and theories of acoustic, concrete, electronic, electroacoustic music and improvisation and simultaneously looks for meaningful and more sustainable ways to keep on working in this often technology-oriented and resource-intensive field.
